Green Bank, a four-hour drive from Washington DC, is a census-designated place in Pocahontas County in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands inside the Allegheny Mountain Range. Green Bank is located along WV 28 and is home to the Green Bank Observatory and the Green Bank Telescope which is used by astronomers to listen to galaxies in the outer space.
Green Bank, the National Radio Quiet Zone = no electromagnetic radiation
Green Bank is famous because it is located within the National Radio Quiet Zone, which means that radio transmissions are restricted by law to facilitate scientific research and military intelligence. This simple town, with a population of 143, has no phone, no radio signal, and hardly any wifi. Therefore, many (about 40) people who suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, come to Green Bank to rest, and some moved in for good to live a life that is essentially of the grid. Even the use of microwave ovens is thrown upon. So perhaps, with little electro-smog, the feng shui of this town could be very good too.
Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS)
Diane Schou suffered from electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) and she moved to Green Bank to escape electrosmog and “be a normal person”. The word about Green Bank, EMFs safe heaven, spread among the global EHS community and others started to come. Mountain Quest Institute offers a kind of sanctuary for electrosensitive people. The owner Alex Bennet, Co-founder of Mountain Quest, says that many guests arrive desperate to have a break from their symptoms and some have relocated to Green Bank. Norman Phillips is one of them, who was very sceptical about electromagnetic hypersensitivity but had to move in Green Bank since he became affected by EHS himself. He now feels comfortable, energetic and youthful, and he doesn’t experience any headaches and ringing in his ears anymore in this place of quiet.
Dangers of electrosmog
It’s now widely recognised that wireless technologies pose serious health risks, from infertility to cancer. Olle Johansson, PhD, Associate Professor in Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden answers this simple question: “How much more radiation penetrates your body today, compared to 10 years ago?”
“Quintillion times more – that is 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 times more!” (18 zeros).
No electrosmog = a better community spirit
So it would be interesting to see what kind of health issues, if any, the residents of Green Bank experience. The residents of Green Bank say that they have a strong community spirit, that probably doesn’t exist anywhere else. Research supports the claim that communities with a strong sense connection have better health and thrive more as opposed to the ones which don’t. Face to face contact facilitates oxytocin production and this hormone is essential for feeling safe and secure. Not being bombarded by electromagnetic radiation 24/7 is a real blessing.
“Just about anything that uses electricity could potentially cause interference to our telescopes,” says Jonah Bauserman, a technician for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Green Bank, West Virginia.
Spiritual feng shui
Since the astrologers at the Green Bank Observatory are looking for extraterrestrial life, this mindset primes people to have a large view of life which technically speaking is spiritual view. In 1961, Frank Drake developed and presented the Drake Equation here, which provides an estimated number of detectable extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. Just thinking about it, makes one connected to all life here on Earth and elsewhere.
Community spirit has also a spiritual dimension as well as direct contact with nature (biophilia).
