On 20 February 2026, the Sagrada Família finally reached its full height, as the last section of the illuminated cross was placed atop the central Tower of Jesus Christ, bringing the basilica to around 172 metres and making it the tallest church in the world. This moment marked the symbolic completion of Gaudí’s vertical vision for Barcelona’s sacred skyline, a fusion of stone, light and geometry that has been rising for more than 140 years.

You can get to Barcelona by bus and even train to Barcelona Sants train station (via France), but air travel is the most efficient. 7.5 million tourists visit Barcelona every year, creating a buzzing nightlife. Barcelona is easy to navigate on foot, but you can also hire a mini taxi, a trixi pedi taxi for a tour, an electric bike, a scooter, or a regular bike. Also, regular black-yellow coloured taxis are very easy to catch on the street or on taxi ranks, so you can get anywhere very quickly and quite inexpensively. La Rambla, the main pedestrian street running through Barcelona, incorporates car traffic and the expansive, uplifting energy of trees, channels, and distributes chi/energy throughout the city.

The Christopher Columbus monument is pointing in the wrong direction (it should face west, towards America). The Sagrada Familia has also incorporated compass directions for specific feng shui applications and usefulness (read below about the feng shui of The Sagrada Familia).

AVE high-speed trains from Barcelona to Madrid can travel at speeds of up to 193 mph (310 km/h), and the fastest journey time by train from Barcelona to Madrid is only 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Structures such as the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, and the Gothic Quarter are rooted in history, showcasing Barcelona’s stability and cultural heritage. La Noche de San Juan, or Saint John’s Night – 23 June – space clearing for Barcelona, Spain and the rest of the world

La Noche de San Juan, or Saint John’s Night, is a cherished tradition in Barcelona and throughout Spain, taking place on the night of June 23rd. Rooted in ancient customs, it is seen as a celebration of the summer solstice, the shortest night of the year, symbolising the victory of light over darkness. This festival can be viewed through the lens of feng shui as a powerful space-clearing ritual, a time for renewal and transformation.

The key elements of La Noche de San Juan align closely with feng shui principles. First, there’s fire (yang force), represented by bonfires lit throughout the city, particularly on beaches. These bonfires are believed to confer protective qualities and serve as a means of purification. In feng shui, fire is transformative, symbolising the burning away of old, stagnant energy and making way for the new. Many people write down what they want to get rid of in their lives and throw this into the fire, symbolically releasing these elements to create room for fresh energy. Nowadays, there are not many bonfires visible, but lots of fireworks on display.

Water, another primary feng shui yin element, plays a vital role in this festival. As part of the tradition, people bathe in the sea at midnight, believing it cleanses and rejuvenates their spirits. Water, in feng shui, is linked with wealth and prosperity, and its cleansing properties align with the idea of clearing away negativity and attracting abundance.

The celebration also includes earth elements, such as herbs. Traditional herbs of San Juan, including thyme, rosemary, and verbena, are believed to possess special properties on this night and are often used in rituals and home decorations. In feng shui, the earth element brings grounding and stability, nurturing balance and harmony.

Finally, the celebration concludes with the rising sun on the morning of Saint John’s Day, symbolising a new beginning, mirroring the renewing aspect of feng shui. On 24 June, the ‘Coque‘, the sole official food of Sant Joan, is a bread-like cake available in bakeries all over the city. Offering a range of options, these cakes come in both sweet and savoury variants, some of which are embedded with ingredients such as crackling, fruit, nuts, or cream. However, the defining commonality across all Coques is the inclusion of anise, which imparts a unique aniseed flavour to every cake.

La Noche de San Juan, therefore, can be seen as a powerful feng shui space-clearing ritual, offering a moment of cleansing, healing, and renewal. It brings together local communities and the global population (tourists) in a celebration that transcends the physical realm, impacting individuals’ spiritual and energetic levels and the city as a whole. It’s uncommon to spot a celebrity or two (Robert Lewandowski and his wife Anna Lewandowska) enjoying this special, once-in-a-year yin and yang celebration.

Markets are the heartbeats of any town or city and give us a sense of the place’s vibe. Valencia is famous for being Europe’s largest market.

Probably the most amazing church in the world – and still a work in progress… I always start my visit to Barcelona at La Sagrada Familia, including a panoramic view of Barcelona from the top (book your tickets to avoid disappointment), and finish my stay there too. Despite all the tourists, it has the most uplifting vibe and atmosphere – and a very good feng shui indeed. The light, the scale, and the richness of detail will blow your mind and enlighten you.

The timeline of the construction of La Sagrada Familia, 1882 – 2032:
1882 The first stone was laid, but a dispute between the architect and the developer, who was the bookseller Josep Maria Bacabella, resulted in the architect being fired. 1883 Bacabella hires Gaudí as the chief architect. In 1926, Gaudí had a tram accident and was sent to the wrong hospital because he was mistaken for being a vagabond, and died as a result. 1930 The Nativity scene is completed. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War began, resulting in the sacking of Gaudí’s studio. In 1953, a manifesto called for all the work to stop, but it didn’t. 1976 The Passion facade is finished. 1992 The Barcelona Olympics start an influx of tourism, which adds extra funds to energise the construction. In 2008, another manifesto talks about the manipulation of Gaudí’s vision, but the work continues. In 2010, the Pope visited the site to consecrate the church as a basilica. In 2011, an arson attack on the sacristy was contained. In 2016, the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, stated that the church lacked a municipal building permit. The 2017 Terrorist bomb plot was averted. 2019: A building permit is issued. 2022 is the year the central towers should be completed. 2026 On 20 February 2026, the Sagrada Família finally reached its full 172-metre height as the cross crowned the Tower of Jesus Christ, completing Gaudí’s soaring sacred skyline. The end of the construction of La Sagrada Familia is to coincide with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. 2032 Final decorations will be completed.

These hues paint the stone walls and columns with a vibrant palette that changes throughout the day, echoing the ebb and flow of nature’s cycles. The interior’s form is uniquely Gaudí, drawing inspiration from the natural world and featuring hyperboloid structures and catenary arches, creating an organic flow that feels both rooted and divine. The emptiness within the vast space holds a profound spiritual quality, encouraging introspection and a connection to the divine.

Together, the yang of the exterior and the yin of the interior create a harmonious balance that echoes the universal principle of duality: yin and yang. This emblematic architecture, much like life, is a dance of the personal and the spiritual, the form and the formless, the dynamic and the serene. It is here, in the heart of Barcelona, that the Sagrada Familia beautifully manifests the yin and yang, captivating all who visit.

The exterior of the basilica, representing the element of earth, is studded with intricate, captivating sculptures that recount diverse biblical tales. These earthly figures, painstakingly sculpted from stone, symbolise the dynamic and unpredictable nature of life itself, akin to the robustness and stability of the earth.

The interior, meanwhile, captures the ethereal element of water with its tranquil, sanctuary-like ambience. The vast openness, akin to an expansive ocean, and the flow of light pouring in through the colourful stained-glass windows mimic the gentle movement of water, while the vibrancy of the colours reflects the variety and depth of aquatic life.

Wood is represented in the naturalistic forms of interior architecture. Drawing inspiration from the woods, Gaudí’s hyperboloid structures and catenary arches, much like trees in a forest, reach towards the heavens, creating a connection between the terrestrial and the celestial.

The element of fire is depicted in the transformative play of light and colour within the interior. As the day progresses, the sunlight, filtered through the stained-glass windows, dances across the walls and columns, creating an ever-changing spectacle of warmth and vibrancy.

Finally, the metal element comes into play in the construction’s careful detailing and strength. As the ancient theory dictates, metal brings structure and rigidity, mirroring the steadfastness of the Sagrada Familia itself.

In this majestic basilica, the Five Elements theory finds a harmonious balance. This architectural masterpiece is more than a testament to human creativity; it is a reflection of the innate connection between humanity and the fundamental elements of existence: water, trees, fire, earth, and metal.

The Sagrada Familia, the magnum opus of Antoni Gaudí, is not just an architectural marvel but also a testament to the genius of its creator in harmonising the basilica with the natural elements, including the sun’s movement. Located in the heart of Barcelona, the basilica’s orientation was carefully planned in relation to the cardinal directions, integrating the building with the daily and yearly solar cycles.

As positioned for the sun rises in the north-east, the first rays of dawn illuminate the Nativity Façade, which represents the birth of Christ. This façade, facing the sunrise, is adorned with scenes and symbols of joy, innocence, and new beginnings, an embodiment of the energy and promise that come with each new day. The intricate carvings are gradually brought to life by the soft morning light, reflecting the world’s awakening.

As the day progresses, the sun moves southward, illuminating the Glory Façade, the basilica’s principal façade. This façade symbolises the journey of human life, from birth through death to final salvation, under the radiant, noonday sun. The light and shadows create a dynamic interplay on the elaborately decorated façade, symbolising the joys and tribulations of life’s journey.

Towards sunset, the sun in the west bathes the Passion Façade in a warm, golden glow. This façade, depicting the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ, stands in stark contrast to the Nativity Façade. The sculptures are austere and angular, mirroring the harsher light of the setting sun, and imbuing the scenes with a sense of solemnity and sacrifice.

Through the night, the moon and stars provide a serene illumination over the basilica, maintaining a subtle connection to the celestial sphere until dawn. The Sagrada Familia, therefore, in the grandeur of its architecture and its interplay with the sun’s journey, becomes a terrestrial clock, marking the passage of time in a daily celebration of human spirituality.

Barcelona has several golden beaches (Llevant, Nove Mar Bella, Mar Bella, Bogatell, Nova Icaria, Barcenoleta, and St. Sebastia). One fun way to get to the beach is to take a cable car (octagonal-shaped) to Barcenoleta.

Catalonia is famous for its cava, a Spanish equivalent of Champagne that uses the same sparkling wine-making techniques but with different grape varieties.

New branded residences in Barcelona

Barcelona is perceived as hip and traditional. There are lots of new developments for people who want to make it home. Depending on your vibe, you can choose apartments near Passeig de Gracia, a prime boulevard in Eixample, Barcelona’s most sophisticated area, which was laid out on a grid system (similar to Manhattan) in the early 20th century. Most buildings are no more than six stories, with stylish apartments featuring high ceilings and tall windows (good feng shui). Or you can go further towards the sea, south in the Gothic Quarters, which is Barcelona’s oldest area, where you can find contemporary apartments with loft-style windows, high ceilings and of course air conditioning – all within walking distance to Las Ramblas and Barcelona beach. Mandarin Oriental Residences is opening in 2020 with 34 apartments and views of La Sagrada Familia and curves of modernist architect Antoni Gaudí on Passeig de Gràcia, and hopefully with good feng shui inside.

FC Barcelona

Founded in 1899, FC Barcelona is one of the oldest and most celebrated football clubs in the world. Hailing from Barcelona, Spain, the club has a rich tradition of excellence, known for its distinctive playing style, often referred to as ‘tiki-taka’, an approach characterised by short passing and movement. FC Barcelona has won numerous domestic and international titles, including the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey. The club has also been home to many of the sport’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi, Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho, and Robert Lewandowski. As of my knowledge cutoff in 2021, FC Barcelona remains a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, boasting the motto “Més que un club” (More than a club).

Famous people who lived and live in Barcelona

Many famous people have lived in Barcelona and still live there. Picasso lived in Barcelona. Guadi, without whom Barcelona wouldn’t be what it is now, lived and worked in Barcelona. Lionel Messi, a footballer, lived here while playing for FC Barcelona (he now plays for Paris). Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies and Salvador Dalí live here. Shakira lived in Barcelona while married to FC Barcelona player Gerard Piqué. George Orwell lived in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, and his experiences inspired his book “Homage to Catalonia.” Robert Lewandowski, who plays for FC Barcelona, and his wife, Anna Lewandowska, and their children live here. They also have a home in Majorca. Anna, the wife of Robert Lewandowski, once said that she had always dreamt of living in Barcelona and running a lifestyle, health and training business. Lewandowski holds the record as Poland’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, additionally ranking third on the list of Europe’s all-time top scorers in men’s international football. Robert’s astrocartography lines running via Spain and near Barcelona are very positive. Anna Lewandowska’s astrocartography lines are also very positive: her Sun line runs very close to Barcelona, which might explain why she dreamt of living here. Also, the same Sun line runs through Majorca, where they have their second home.

History of Valencia
Valencia was founded in 138 BC and is one of the oldest cities in Spain.

Valencia has all five elements or energies in a state of great balance. Valencia is conveniently located by the sea, with Europe’s fifth-largest port and a long stretch of the seafront, including Las Arenas, Malvarrosa, and El Saler beaches. You can also have a go at waterball (zorbing) at the City of Arts and Sciences, which has the largest aquarium in Europe. Valencia has one of the largest urban parks in Europe – Jardín del Turia. You can see the park (9km and 13 bridges) by hiring a quadricycle. You can visit Parc Gulliver (free admission) for a fun walk and a slide ride. The weather in Valencia is its fire element. The earth element is represented by historic architecture, for example, La Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange) and the Cathedral with its octagonal tower (great feng shui, and you can climb the 207 steps up to the top for great views of the city). The City of the Arts and Sciences is the metal element.

Spiritual feng shui of Valencia
Valencia’s 13th-century Cathedral is a must-see for connecting with the city’s spiritual side. If you’re a fan of Dan Brown, you’ll be especially interested in the holy grail (carbon-dated to 300BC to 100AD, with base and handles added in the Middle Ages), which is on display there, as the Vatican only recognised its potential.

The energy of food and drinks
Visit La Bella De Cadiz to try their famous cocktail, Agua de Valencia which was invented in 1959 (and is composed of sugar, vodka, gin, fresh Valencian orange juice, and Cava as well as Cointreau can be added), as well as Paella School – Valencia, is the birthplace of paella and the dish is celebrated in March every year (all ingredients that go into paella are local, from the rice grown in fields north and south of the city and the saffron that flavours the rice).

My favourite feng shui place is as always a local market and Valencia has one to remember, the Central Market – the largest market in Europe! Built from 1910 to 1928 with a 30m high dome and over 1000 stalls. It’s probably the first market to have computerised scales (1996). If you’re a vegan, you might like to miss some departments in this huge market. I was a bit disappointed with this market, because they only sell produce there, and there was only one tiny place to eat inside. I was hoping to eat in, as you can in the markets in Barcelona, Lisbon, and some other cities.

Also, Colón Market is a great place to visit. All Spanish delicacies, such as chorizo, jamón ibérico, manchego cheese, and more, can be found there. What not to love?

Feng shui of Valencia Market Central

You must try Horchata drink (made of tiger nuts, water, cinnamon, and sugar and apparently helps with reduction of cholesterol) accompanied by Farton (created in the 1960s), a cake-like sponge to be dunked in the drink.

Las Fallas is Valencia’s fiesta, celebration and marking of the beginning of spring, and it takes place on the 19th of March – a perfect time to visit this amazing city.

At the consumer electronics fair CES 2020, Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s CEO, announced a plan to build an intelligent city at the foot of Mount Fuji (watch the video below). The Woven City will contain all the technologies of the future: autonomous cars, robots, the latest electronic devices, intelligent equipment in apartments and an innovative communication system, consisting of roadways for vehicles, routes for bicycles and electric scooters and separate pedestrian paths.

Branded cities
It looks like large corporations are clearly starting to take a new direction for their brands. They want to go beyond just producing autonomous cars, robots and artificial intelligence. The brands of the future will construct the entire cities to create total and holistic brand ecosystems. Following this new trend, the Japanese automotive concern Toyota has just decided to follow in the footsteps of the American company Google. Who’s going to go next? Apple? Amazon?

Ecological city
Toyota’s Woven City will be hydrogen and solar-powered and will have its own population. The planners have designed housing for 2,000 citizens, including Toyota employees and their families. The city was designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. The city will live its own life and Toyota will be able to test the latest technologies and services in it. The idea of ​​the Japanese automotive company is similar to the intelligent city project that Google has long intended to build in Toronto.

I have always felt a strong pull toward New York City. As a feng shui practitioner I am mesmerised by its skyline and its kinetic energy. I have visited the city on many occasions and each return deepens my appreciation for the interplay of rivers, parks, skyscrapers and bustling streets. The dense architecture and the relentless movement of people and traffic create a palpable vitality, while the green oases and waterfronts offer pockets of calm. New York’s mixture of architectural grandeur, cultural diversity and sheer momentum invites continual study from a feng shui perspective.

Feng shui, which translates to wind–water, is concerned with harmonising human environments with the natural flow of energy or qi. Applied at the scale of a city, feng shui evaluates landforms, waterways, street patterns, building heights, orientation, and the social life of its inhabitants. A well‑balanced urban landscape integrates yin (quiet, receptive) and yang (active, expressive) zones and exhibits all five elements: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. In this blog I analyse New York through this framework. I consider the island geography of Manhattan, the network of rivers, the major parks and public spaces, the dynamic nightlife, and the iconic architecture. I also explore high‑point viewpoints, the district New Yorkers regard as their heart, and a key annual festival that embodies the city’s qi.

Landform, water and the island configuration

Manhattan island and river setting
New York is organised around the island of Manhattan, which lies between the Hudson River to the west, the Harlem River to the north and the East River to the east, with New York Harbour to the south. The island is about 13.4 miles long and 2.3 miles wide and covers roughly twenty‑two square miles. Smaller islands – including Roosevelt Island, Governors Island and Liberty Island – form part of the borough. The watery envelope creates a strong sense of natural boundary and offers protection while allowing commerce and travel. In feng shui terms Manhattan resembles a flat water dragon: the island’s elongated shape and its surrounding rivers encourage quick‑moving qi associated with finance and activity. At the southern tip of Manhattan the Hudson and East Rivers merge, forming a powerful confluence. Confluences are regarded as natural power spots because they concentrate water qi; it is no coincidence that Wall Street and the Financial District, the centres of economic power, sit on this vortex.

Rivers and water qi
Several major waterways nourish New York’s qi. The Hudson River originates in the Adirondack Mountains and flows approximately 315 miles southward before reaching the city, where it forms the western boundary and a key transport artery. The East River is a 16‑mile tidal strait linking New York Harbour to Long Island Sound; it separates Manhattan from Brooklyn and Queens and ranges from 600 to 4 000 feet wide. The Harlem River, about eight miles long, connects the Hudson to the East River and forms the boundary between Manhattan and the Bronx. These waterways moderate the climate, supply scenic waterfronts and foster recreation and commerce. Within Manhattan, Central Park contains eight lakes and ponds, including the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, while Prospect Park in Brooklyn has a 60‑acre lake. Together the rivers and internal lakes provide abundant water qi, tempering the urban heat island and enhancing well‑being.

The five elements in New York

Water
Water in New York is expressed through its rivers, harbour and countless bodies of water within the parks. The Hudson, East and Harlem rivers encircle Manhattan, bringing in maritime breezes and forming a natural moat around the urban core. The harbour opens the city to the Atlantic Ocean and symbolises exchange and openness. Inside the city, Central Park’s reservoirs, ponds and streams create tranquil vistas and serve as habitats for birds and aquatic life. Prospect Park’s lake and boathouse add further aquatic amenities. Rain‑driven bioswales and fountains in plazas contribute to humidity and provide soothing sounds. All of these water features enhance the flexibility and adaptability associated with the water element.

Wood
Despite its dense built form, New York is rich in green space. Central Park, established in 1857, covers 843 acres and offers meadows, woodlands, gardens, a zoo, an ice‑skating rink, concert venues and bodies of water. It is the most visited urban park in the United States and provides a powerful lung for Manhattan, encouraging jogging, boating, picnicking and contemplation. Prospect Park in Brooklyn extends over 526 acres and features a 90‑acre Long Meadow, sports facilities and a lake. The High Line, a 1.45‑mile elevated linear park built on a disused railway spur, meanders through the West Side with plantings that change with the seasons and vistas of the Hudson River. Neighbourhood gardens, tree‑lined streets and the planting strips along avenues further contribute to the wood element. These green spaces not only mitigate pollution and heat but also offer spaces for creativity and renewal. From the five element theory, wood element is also characterised by tall buildings which have upward energy.

Fire
New York’s nickname “the city that never sleeps” reflects its fire element. The city pulses with energy day and night: Broadway theatres, concert halls and music clubs draw crowds until the early hours, while bars and nightclubs in districts like Times Square and the Meatpacking District keep their doors open past dawn. Times Square itself is bathed in a blaze of neon and LED lights, creating a perpetual daylight and generating a stimulating yang environment. The city’s calendar is packed with festivals, parades and sporting events that ignite communal enthusiasm. This constant movement and illumination exemplify the warm, expansive qualities of fire.

Earth
The earth element manifests in New York’s solid architecture and enduring institutions. Skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building – a 102‑storey Art Deco masterpiece completed in 1931 that rises 1 250 feet to the roof and 1 454 feet with its spire – and the Chrysler Building, completed in 1930 with a stainless‑steel spire reaching 1 046 feet, anchor the skyline and symbolise stability. Grand Central Terminal, the New York Public Library and numerous pre‑war apartment buildings are constructed from stone, brick and terracotta, grounding the city in tradition. Markets like Chelsea Market, located in the former National Biscuit Company factory and hosting fishmongers, butchers, cheesemongers and bakeries, and the Union Square Greenmarket, which assembles up to 140 farmers and producers four days a week, connect residents with local food and seasonal rhythms. Cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with over two million works spanning five thousand years, provide spaces for contemplation and scholarship. These earth‑oriented structures and venues foster nourishment, stability and continuity.

Metal
Metal is represented by New York’s financial prowess, transport infrastructure and sleek modern buildings. Wall Street’s corporate towers and the steel‑framed skyscrapers of Midtown and Downtown demonstrate precision, logic and value exchange associated with the metal element. New towers such as One World Trade Center, with its reflective facade and spire, and the glass‑clad Hudson Yards complex communicate clarity and sophistication. The city’s extensive subway and commuter rail networks channel people and information efficiently. Museums and libraries offer intellectual clarity, while public art and sculptures in plazas introduce metallic forms into everyday life.

Yin and yang balance

New York balances yin calm and yang excitement. Yin spaces include the shaded pathways of Central Park and Prospect Park, waterfront esplanades along the Hudson and East rivers, and quiet reading rooms in libraries and museums. Residential blocks in Greenwich Village, the West Village and Brooklyn Heights provide a human scale, with tree‑lined streets and brownstone stoops that invite conversation. Conversely, yang environments abound in Midtown, Times Square, Wall Street and Broadway, where noise, light and crowds are intense. By alternating between tranquil parks and bustling districts, residents can replenish their energy and avoid burnout. This coexistence of complementary energies sustains the city’s livability.

Qi flow, orientation and urban layout

Unlike Rome’s organic pattern, Manhattan is laid out on the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which imposed a rectilinear grid of avenues and cross streets tilted about 29 degrees east of true north to align with the island’s orientation. An important date: New Year’s Eve in Times Square

Every 31 December I join revellers from around the world to witness the Times Square ball drop. At precisely 11:59 p.m. a luminous sphere measuring twelve feet in diameter and weighing over eleven thousand pounds begins its descent from a flagpole on One Times Square. The ball is covered with thousands of crystal triangles and illuminated by tens of thousands of LED lights; as it falls over sixty seconds the crowd unites in a collective countdown. This tradition, inaugurated in 1907, marks the passage into a new year and draws millions of television viewers. For me the event encapsulates the fire element: the glowing sphere, the cheers and the fireworks generate intense yang energy that momentarily fills the crossroads of the world. Yet the ritual also has a reflective quality: after the drop, confetti rains down like water, and people hug and wish each other well. Experiencing this mix of excitement and renewal reminds me that New York’s qi is constantly regenerating through communal celebration.

When comparing global cities through symbolic keywords, certain associations emerge. Rome evokes power because its palaces and institutions have long embodied political and religious authority. Paris is synonymous with romance, thanks to its art, architecture, cobbled streets and the emblematic Eiffel Tower. London radiates vibrancy and multiculturalism, blending centuries of history with a cosmopolitan energy. Berlin is regarded as a creative hub, known for affordable living and a thriving arts scene. Barcelona exudes culture and creativity, setting trends in design and festivals. Tokyo epitomises the fusion of modernity and tradition through its juxtaposition of neon skyscrapers and ancient temples. New York is famed as the city that never sleeps, reflecting its relentless economic and cultural dynamism and twenty‑four‑hour lifestyle. These descriptors distil the distinctive energies each city projects on the global stage.

New York’s planners and builders have long harnessed natural and cultural forces when shaping the city. The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 aligned the street grid with the island’s shape and orientation, recognising that streets should follow the land’s contours rather than point to the cardinal directions. The plan provided a rational framework that allowed sunlight and prevailing winds to circulate while creating a legible urban fabric. Diagonal routes such as Broadway intersect the grid and generate energetic nodes at plazas and squares. Pencil Thin: 432 Park Avenue and Feng Shui – Case study

432 Park Avenue – New York’s iconic “pencil building” – is a striking example of extreme slenderness in skyscraper design, intended to symbolise status, minimalism, and ambition within the city’s skyline. From a feng shui perspective, however, the tower’s aesthetic focus on verticality and sharp lines may disrupt the harmonious flow of qi, as it lacks the rounded forms and careful siting that characterise auspicious architecture in classical feng shui Chinese practice. The inclusion of open mechanical floors – engineered to ease wind loads by allowing air to pass through the structure – mirrors, on a purely physical level, some principles similar to the iconic “dragon hole” in the Repulse Bay in Hong Kong, as both interventions arise from the need to mediate environmental forces for structural and energetic balance. Yet, while wind penetration is a pragmatic necessity in buildings of such proportions, these voids do not carry the layered cosmological or psychological meaning ascribed in feng shui traditions.

Practically, the “missing” floors in 432 Park Avenue have not solved all the building’s problems. As usual, I started at the Edinburgh castle which is sitting atop an extinct volcano, to witness the best panoramic view of the city. The castle, which also houses Edinburgh’s oldest standing building, St Margaret’s Chapel, built in 1130 by King David I, has witnessed many Scotland’s tumultuous episodes of its history. And now over a million annual visitors can appreciate the views.

Scottish Parliament

I’m a feng shui critic and I can’t avoid mentioning the Scottish Parliament’s building. It’s my job to ask questions such as: “Does it work?”, “What does it do?”, “Is it good for what it is?” and so on in relation to the environmental and social impact on people, their physiology, their minds and souls.

Spanish architect Enric Miralles was inspired by Scotland’s landscapes and cultural symbolism (apparently) and Scottish materials such as Kemnay granite and rare Caithness flagstone were used in the construction. Its historic significance comes from self-governance that returned to Scotland under devolution in 1999. Miralles intention for the design of the parliament building was that it would represent and present national Scottish identity.

Interesting choice of shapes for the elevation of the Scottish Parlament. To me, these look like guns. Why? Is it just me? Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Feng shui is a recognition, semiotic tool. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” said Marcel Proust. Half of the Scottish people want Scotland to be independent. Will such divisive, divergent, threatening and militaristic design for their parliament help them?

The design might be original but does it actually work feng shui-wise for its purpose? Would you like to be sitting under this oppressing ceiling debating important, national issues, such as independence, etc? In feng shui, good design and environmental psychology it is recognised that pointing, sharp objects or shapes affect people in a negative way. These kinds of features are called ‘cutting or knife’ chi or energy and for a good reason (we don’t like it when somebody points a finger, knife or gun at us).

Also, symbolically, semiotically and metaphorically speaking it doesn’t evoke any positive images of harmony, balance, unity, clarity, focus, cooperation, democracy, freedom, creativity and so on – all the values you’d want from a good, fair, effective and efficient government. For contrast, look at the beautiful, harmonious ceiling of Gothic St Giles’ Cathedral below – how things come together in unity and balance – in convergence.

Gary Lynch, the general manager of Texas-based Rising S Co., told The Sun that demand for underground doomsday bunkers is up more than 1000% since the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Bunkers start as low as $40,000 and can reach multi-million-dollar, depending on the client’s needs (feng shui is not included). Super rich in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom are panic buying ‘doomsday bunkers’. The Google trend search exploded to highs not seen in years at the end of last week.

Did you know… Switzerland has enough nuclear bunkers for its population
In Switzerland, most houses built after 1963 have to have nuclear bunkers by law. The government passed legislation in 1963 that required nuclear shelters in all types of housing in Switzerland. Switzerland is the first country in the world to have enough bunkers to shelter its population from a nuclear blast. In 2012 the Federal Council approved a new law that only required bunkers for buildings with more than 38 apartments. Although some shelters are now defunct, the law in Switzerland stipulates that Swiss residents must be “guaranteed a shelter in the vicinity of their place of residence.” There are around 360.000 communal bunkers in Switzerland that are operational (the population of Switzerland is over 8 million). Recently, when I was working in Switzerland (Geneva, Zurich), I witnessed and checked a few properties which indeed have nuclear bunkers.
