Feng shui treats the built environment as an active participant in human flourishing. When space, placement and flow are aligned with intention, environments stop acting as passive backdrops and start operating as mirrors and amplifiers of inner states. This practical blog translates the mirror principle into a feng shui framework and integrates insights from environmental psychology and related fields. The aim is practical and evidence informed. You will learn how to read your environment, recalibrate your personal frequency through spatial change, recondition and space condition your home and workplace and deploy specific feng shui tools to support the manifestation of clear goals.

Unlike the traditional adage that success requires doing more and working harder, feng shui shows that by doing less but with greater alignment, you can achieve more with ease, flow and resonance.

True manifestation arises not from relentless struggle but from creating environments that naturally support your goals, allowing success to unfold with grace and ease. Begin by making one intentional change in your space today and experience how feng shui can transform both your energy and your outcomes.

The mirror principle in feng shui

Classical feng shui understands qi as patterned vitality moving through landform, structures and rooms. The way forms, thresholds and uses of space are arranged feeds back into mood, decision making and social relationships. In contemporary language, your outer world echoes and entrains your inner world. If the qi field of a home is congested through clutter, blocked circulation or ambiguous function, inhabitants often report fatigue, indecision and relational friction. If the field is coherent, with clear entry sequence, purposeful zones and nourishing anchors, inhabitants tend to describe ease, clarity and momentum. This interpretation remains consistent with long standing scholarship on feng shui as the cultivation of auspicious relations between people and place, while acknowledging modern applications inside homes and workplaces (Bruun, 2008; Feuchtwang, 1974; Mak & Ng, 2005).

Two Approaches to Manifestation: Doing More versus Doing Less

When it comes to manifestation and success, two contrasting approaches are often highlighted. On the one hand, motivational teachers such as Anthony Robbins emphasise relentless action and intensity. Robbins suggests that hunger is the single most important trait for success, and that achievement demands doing more, pushing harder, and working tirelessly until goals are reached (Robbins, 2024). This perspective aligns with a Western ethic of productivity and discipline, where effort and output are seen as the direct correlates of results.

In contrast, figures such as Joe Dispenza offer a very different lens rooted in quantum perspectives and Taoist philosophy. Dispenza argues that true manifestation requires less effort, not more. Instead of striving, one learns to align energy, frequency, and intention so that desired outcomes flow naturally (Dispenza, 2023). This mirrors the Taoist principle expressed in the Tao Te Ching: “The master does nothing, yet nothing is left undone.” Feng shui, itself derived from Taoist thought, reflects this same orientation, seeking harmony with the natural order (Tao) rather than struggle against it.

In this blog, we take inspiration from the latter approach i.e. doing less to achieve more! Rather than advocating relentless striving, feng shui offers a path of alignment. By harmonising your environment and attuning it to the frequency of your goals, you create conditions where manifestation can occur with greater ease and fluidity. Success then becomes less about over-exertion and more about resonance with the energy of what you seek.

The word manifest was declared Cambridge Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2024 — a choice reflecting its extraordinary surge in both searches and cultural resonance during the year. Originally denoting something “clear” or “obvious,” the term has evolved to signify the modern practice of bringing inner intentions into physical reality, often through affirmations, visualisations, and energetic alignment. Within a feng shui framework, manifest thus embodies the transformative act of turning intention into environment, and environment into lived reality — serving as a bridge between vision and form.
The science behind space, energy and frequency

Environmental psychology shows that space is not neutral. Perceived household disorder is associated with elevated daily cortisol and more negative affect in adults, a profile compatible with chronic stress (Saxbe & Repetti, 2010). Experimental work on order and disorder finds that orderly settings promote convention following and healthier choices, whereas mild disorder can increase divergent thinking. The appropriate choice depends on task demands, yet either way the environment nudges cognition and behaviour (Vohs, Redden, & Rahinel, 2013). Attentional restoration frameworks further suggest that views of nature and cues of soft fascination replenish directed attention and down regulate stress, which aligns with the classical feng shui preference for prospect, refuge and living greenery (Kaplan, 1995; Ohly et al., 2016; Ulrich, 1984).

Cues also prime goals. Subtle environmental signals, including words, symbols and artefacts, can nonconsciously influence motivation and behaviour. This priming literature is mixed and context dependent, but the core finding remains that repeated exposure to goal congruent cues can bias attention and readiness to act, especially when those cues are meaningful to the individual (Dolan et al., 2012; Fitzsimons, Chartrand, & Fitzsimons, 2008; Weingarten et al., 2015). A feng shui approach uses this judiciously by designing salient anchors that resonate with chosen aims instead of saturating rooms with generic affirmations.

On frequency based tools, evidence is emergent. Sound based practices such as singing bowl meditation have shown short term reductions in tension and negative mood in small uncontrolled studies, which supports their use as supportive, not substitutive, wellbeing tools (Goldsby, Goldsby, McWalters, & Mills, 2017). Extremely low frequency phenomena such as the Schumann Resonance (SR) frequency have been linked to physiological indices in observational work, but findings are preliminary and should not be interpreted as medical effects. Within a feng shui context, frequency devices and generators such as Helios3 and acoustic interventions are best framed as calming entrainment aids that complement, rather than replace, environmental change and personal agency (Mitsutake et al., 2005).

How to use feng shui to recalibrate your frequency to manifest

Step 1 Read your space with intention

Walk through your home, workspace and key digital environments with three questions.
What does this area currently say about me?
Does it reflect the future I am choosing?
Where does the qi feel open, where does it feel stuck?
Record quick notes room by room and capture three pictures per area to make patterns visible. Common signals include an obstructed threshold that mirrors difficulty receiving opportunities, a cluttered desk that mirrors divided attention, or an unused wellbeing corner that mirrors stalled self care. Awareness is the first adjustment.

The Three Core Rules of Feng Shui

Feng shui, at its essence, can be distilled into three guiding rules that address the flow and quality of qi (life energy) within a space. These rules offer a practical framework for assessing and improving environments so they support health, prosperity, and well-being.

1. If qi is obstructed – unblock it
When qi cannot move freely, it stagnates, leading to feelings of heaviness, tension, or delay in life. Common obstructions include cluttered hallways, blocked entrances, or furniture positioned directly in pathways. The remedy is to restore circulation. Clear unnecessary items, reposition furniture, and ensure pathways feel open and welcoming. In feng shui philosophy, the front door is called the “mouth of qi” because it is the primary entry point for energy; if this threshold is blocked, opportunities are also obstructed (Rossbach, 1987).

2. If qi is tight – loosen and relax it
Overly constricted qi creates pressure and strain. Spaces that are cramped, filled with sharp angles, or visually overwhelming can cause occupants to feel stressed and unsettled. Loosening qi means softening edges, introducing curves, using soothing colours, and ensuring that there is breathing room in the arrangement. Plants, fabric textures, and lighting can help diffuse tension. This mirrors findings in environmental psychology, where visual overload increases cognitive fatigue, while balanced, calming settings reduce stress (Han & Wang, 2019).

3. If qi is lax or weak – strengthen it
Weak qi leaves spaces feeling flat, lifeless, or uninspiring. This is often found in poorly lit rooms, neglected corners, or areas lacking colour and vitality. To strengthen qi, introduce vibrancy and nourishment: add light, fresh plants, water features, or art that inspires. Use strong symbolic anchors such as crystals or images of abundance to energise a space. In feng shui, vitality comes from balance, so strengthening is not about overloading with objects, but about choosing meaningful enhancements that uplift the frequency of the environment (Lip, 1995).

Together, these three rules provide a simple yet profound guide. If energy is blocked, free it. If it is constricted, soften it. If it is weak, revitalise it. Applied consistently, they create flow, harmony, and resonance, aligning space with the aspirations of those who inhabit it and boosting their energy and frequency for manifestation.

Step 2: Create anchors and rituals of abundance and alignment

Convert goals into precise, material anchors and rituals. For wealth cultivation, place a well designed, functioning wallet and intentional bookkeeping station where you habitually initiate financial tasks. For focus and scholarship, curate a clear, well lit desk with one visible research question card. For relational warmth, pair bedside tables and create symmetry in the bedroom to cue reciprocity. Small salient cues, anchors and rituals can prime identity consistent action when they are authentic and regularly encountered, which is why fewer, better anchors and rituals outperform many generic ones (Fitzsimons et al., 2008; Dolan et al., 2012).

Feng shui = intention + ritual

Step 3: Clear clutter, reduce resistance

In feng shui, stagnant objects bind qi. In environmental psychology, visual and functional clutter consumes attentional resources and raises stress reactivity. Begin with narrow zones such as the entry surface, bedside cabinet, or downloads folder.
Apply a three part test:
Does it serve a current function?
Does it carry positive affect?
Does its location support flow?
Release items that fail the test and close the loop through recycling or donation. The aim is not austerity, it is clarity and friction reduction for future action (Saxbe & Repetti, 2010; Vohs et al., 2013). Apply the same logic to digital feng shui by reducing notifications, batching email checks and deleting obsolete files. Digital clutter correlates with overload and stress and benefits from simple hygiene protocols such as scheduled inbox triage and archive rules (Armstrong, 2017; Kushlev & Dunn, 2015; Neave, Tzemou, Fastnacht, & Webber, 2019). In short, it drains your energy, your chi, your attention so then you don’t have energy to manifest.

Step 4: Elevate one life area to match your manifesting

Select a single domain where an environmental upgrade would have the highest leverage. For income, optimally locate your work zone with good light, a supportive chair and clean sight lines to the door for command position. For love and partnership, design a bedroom that signals invitation and ease, with balanced pairs and tactile softness. For focus and creativity, curate a project altar or research wall that holds only current hypotheses and evidence, and keep a separate repository for archival material. Embody the environment of the person you are becoming and your actions begin to align, which strengthens self efficacy and momentum. Use the bagua model to locate areas that need a boost for manifestation.

Step 5: Let relationships mirror, too

You are a part of the field. Map your proximal social environment by energy contribution.
Who uplifts, who drains, who is neutral?
Strengthen boundaries where necessary and invest in relationships that are reciprocal. In practice, the social redesign often follows the spatial redesign. As you change your environmental cues, your behaviour and expectations shift, and relationships recalibrate accordingly. This is consistent with behavioural science on norms and defaults, and with the relational ethics embedded in classical feng shui lineages which emphasise harmony and appropriate distance (Bruun, 2008; Dolan et al., 2012). Remember your goal – optimise and boost your energy for your manifestation. A shortcut to letting go of relationships that don’t serve you any more is: The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins by which you can stop trying to control others, and start reclaiming your own energy.

Building a feng shui lifestyle for sustainable manifestation

Rather than episodic declutters, develop rhythms that keep the field coherent. Align daily transitions with small rituals. Place a journal and pen by the bed to capture insights upon waking. Keep supplements by the kettle so morning tea cues self care. Place a green plant within your primary view and open curtains each morning to reset circadian rhythm and mood. Apply similar logic to your phone, desktop and calendar. Curate the home screen to one row of essentials. Archive social feeds that consistently dysregulate you and follow sources that uplift your values. Schedule deep work blocks and put emails into two deliberate batches per day where possible, adjusting for role constraints. The design intention is ease, not perfection. A living space that genuinely supports your energy and aims is preferable to a showroom that exhausts you (Ohly et al., 2016; Armstrong, 2017).

Feng shui tools and frequency enhancers

The following tools can be selected and combined according to intention and context.

Compass and form analysis. Use the front door, building form and surrounding landform to understand protective and nourishing flows. Prioritise command position for beds and desks, a clear, welcoming threshold, and an intelligible path of travel from entry to key rooms.

The bagua as diagnostic map. Apply an appropriate school’s bagua overlay to identify under nourished life areas and to guide placement of anchors. Treat this as a reflective map rather than a rigid template. Classical sources emphasise artisanal judgement and responsiveness to site conditions (Bruun, 2008; Feuchtwang, 1974).

Natural elements and biophilic cues. Plants, daylight, water imagery and natural materials can assist down regulation and attentional restoration. Choose species and placements that fit light conditions and maintenance capacity (Kaplan, 1995; Ulrich, 1984; Ohly et al., 2016).

Sound and rhythm. Singing bowls, wind chimes, sound interventions and intentional playlists can function as gentle entrainment aids before focused work or sleep. Use short, consistent sessions. Evidence suggests immediate mood benefits are possible for some users, although studies are small and preliminary (Goldsby et al., 2017).

Digital feng shui protocols. Reduce notifications, batch communication where role allows, and design email rules to protect attention, and block ads. These measures reduce perceived stress and support consistent follow through, which is necessary for manifestation practices to take effect (Kushlev & Dunn, 2015; Armstrong, 2017).

Low technology frequency harmonisers and generators. If you choose to experiment with devices that purport to broadcast low frequency fields, place them as adjuncts to, not substitutes for, spatial improvements and daily habits. Treat perceived benefits as subjective support. (Mitsutake et al., 2005). Enhance your frequency alignment and entrain and space condition your home and workplace with Helios3 – Schumann Resonance frequency generator.
Sleep on Pimat – pyramid frequency generator to energise and protect your aura.

Next steps… to manifest…

When you treat your rooms and routines as mirrors, manifesting becomes embodied practice. The steps above are deliberately modest, because modest, repeated environmental signals entrain behaviour more reliably than grand overhauls performed once a year. Begin with a brief audit, install two or three precise anchors, clear one constricted zone, and pilot a small acoustic or frequency ritual that helps you settle. Iterate weekly. If you would like a structured assessment and a bespoke plan, consider a professional feng shui consultation (onsite or online) with me. A formal feng shui survey can map the building and plot, identify priority interventions, and, where appropriate, integrate frequency based supports in a careful, evidence informed way.

Your space is both a mirror and a tool. By aligning your environment with the energy of your intentions, you create a feedback loop that supports manifestation. Small, intentional changes can trigger profound shifts, especially when combined with the right tools that elevate frequency and harmony.

As a feng shui consultant with four decades of experience, I offer tailored guidance to harmonise your home, workplace, and lifestyle with your dreams and goals.

Feng shui + happiness + joy = abundance

Can feng shui boost happiness and joy and then ultimately abundance? Yes, and there is now scientific research backing up the claims. From a traditional feng shui perspective joy and happiness is attributed to the Lake section of the bagua or West sector or offspring if you like. But you don’t have to just limit feng shui those unique spaces in your home or office. You can spread the elements of happiness and joy throughout the whole home or workplace and make your life more abundant. Different interior design elements can enhance your happiness and joy in different ways and ultimately making you healthier and more successful and ultimately more abundant.

Why balloons make us happy?
Happiness and Joy

Happiness is defined as positive and encompassing emotions ranging from contentment and satisfaction to bliss and intense pleasure that you feel over a long time. So when asked, ‘Are you happy?’ you need to scan and evaluate a period of a current lifetime to answer this question. Happiness is an overall feeling or state of being happy in general and it is built over time and consists of and covers many aspects and dimensions.

“Life is probably round.” van Gogh

Joy is defined as a momentary experience of positive emotion that make you smile and laugh, right now. Joy can make you feel like you want to jump up and down which some psychologists use as a measure of joy.

Environmental psychology

Environmental psychology and aesthetics explain why certain colours, shapes, light and so on makes us feel happy and joyful. Aesthetics comes from the same root as the Greek word ‘aísthomai’, which means, ‘I feel,’ ‘I sense,’ ‘I perceive.’ Changing and making hospitals or homes more colourful can make us healthier, reverse ageing and uplift mood. Unfortunately, most places look dull and grey – so adding a bit of colour can make a huge difference. Making our environments more joyful make us feel more youthful because we associate joy with young age. Research suggests many benefits of adding colour and improving environments from school and work attendance improvement, less graffiti and vandalism, feeling safer, more alertness and confidence as well as more friendliness in workplaces.

Polka dots

Colour

Bright colour makes us happy and more alert. You see a vintage yellow Volkswagen and it makes you smile. Colour is frequency and energy. You put on coloured pink glasses and you literally see the world pink. From the evolutionary perspective, colour is very primal for survival. It signals life and energy and consequently abundance. Multiplicity and abundance mean survival as opposed to scarcity which signals danger. There is plenty of scientific evidence on how colour affects our moods, thinking and behaviour. “Colours function as a subtle primer, exerting a direct influence on motivation and behaviour without individuals’ conscious awareness.” says psychologist Andrew Elliot. Colour can transform any environment, boost productivity and creativity, enhance the recovery rate in hospitals, reduce vandalism as well as crime and violence in prisons, help kids to focus, and so on. Vibrant living coral is the colour of 2019.

Play

Brian Massumi in What Animals Teach Us About Politics (Durham, Duke University Press, 2014. 22) has a suggestion on life and animality in order to release us from the rigid human logic and modes of normativity. It is play. Play gives us a perspective on our actions:

“The animal in play actively, effectively affirms paradox. This augments its capacities in at least two ways. On the one hand, animals learn through play (to the extent that a play fight is preparation for the real combat engagements that may be necessary in the future). On the other hand, the purview of its mental powers expands. In play, the animal elevates itself to the metacommunicational level, where it gains the capacity to mobilize the possible. Its powers of abstraction rise a notch. Its powers of thought are augmented. Its life capacities more fully deploy, if abstractly. Its forces of vitality are intensified accordingly. The ludic gesture is a vital gesture. Humans may also practice effective paradox, when they permit themselves to abandon themselves to play. In play, the human enters a zone of indiscernibility with the animal.”

“Play is the antidote for uncertainty.”

Lightness, elevation and colour

Round vs square shapes

Neuroscientists have studied the human response to round versus square shapes and found that the amygdala (flight or fight, fear and anxiety brain centre), lits up when people look at angular objects, but not when they look at the round ones. Evolutionarily speaking we associate sharp or angular objects with threat and danger so we naturally try to avoid these shapes to us. On the other hand, curves put us at ease. In feng shui, cutting or knife chi/energy is to be avoided. “Circular motion accommodates, as rectilinearity does not, the coming together of opposites.” states Iain McGilchrist, Psychiatrist, doctor, author of The Master and His Emissary, The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. In 2019, the year of the earth pig – round ceramic vases (earth element) are the perfect addition for boosting harmony as well as prosperity (they are considered containers of wealth).

My environmental psychology master’s degree study focused on the preference between angularity and curvilinearity and confirmed that most people prefer round and oval designs to angular ones.

Symmetrical shapes
Humans like symmetry and balance because they suggest order and stability. Feng shui is about harmony, balance, stability that give security in the ever-changing world. Research suggests that when people are exposed to asymmetrical and unbalanced patterns these activate specific neurological structures in the brain that activate all kind of unwanted behaviours, such as cheating at the exam, for example.

Fractals which are mathematical sets that usually displays self-similar patterns (Benoît Mandelbrot, 1975) also make us feel good. The concept of fractal extends beyond self-similarity and can include detailed patterns repeating themselves. Our bodies and nature are fractal and that’s why we feel the affinity with them. It is said, that if you don’t like fractals, you probably don’t like yourself. It is also said, that love is fractal.

Abundance and multiplicity
Scarcity is the opposite of abundance. Richness, abundance and multiplicity mean survival and life. That’s why we generally prefer rich and vibrant environments. People prefer farmers markets to shopping centres because of the vibe and the energy, life force (chi) that is created by vegetables and fruit.

We associate abundance with survival

Air plants

Lightness and elevation
When we feel happy and joyful we feel a certain lightness and elevation. People, sometimes and especially kids can’t contain their joy and happiness and feel like jumping because of that. Depression, unhappiness is usually associated with heavy feelings and dark places. Studies suggest that people working or living in high ceilings offices or rooms feel more optimistic, creative and generally have a better outlook on life. The metaphor, ‘sky is the limit’ suggests the inner knowing about the spaciousness of possibilities. Joy looks light and fluffy – it flows gently in the air, like bubbles and balloons (if you’re going to use balloons, be responsible and don’t pollute nature with them since they’re also a health hazard for animals.

Ingrid Fetell Lee, the author of Joyful: the Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness, suggests to notice visual and sensorial patterns in the things that bring you joy, and she identified 10 “aesthetics” or values of joy: abundance, harmony, energy, freedom, play, surprise, transcendence, magic, renewal, and celebration. All these values of joy are what feng shui is about and what makes feng shui work. In this video below, we learn more about each aesthetic and why focusing on joyful moments is the key to getting the most out of life.
Top feng shui tips to boost happiness, joy and abundance

Add any things and objects that make you happy, playful and joyful and spread them around your home and workplace. Recall when you were a child what made you happy, playful and joyful.

Include more colour – everywhere. Paint one wall a bright colour. Get lots of colourful cushions. Have confetti poppers around. Paint a rainbow or get a rainbow maker which is my favourite feng shui remedy. The rainbow makers or crystals are very versatile because you can use them in different parts of the bagua to activate and energies different life aspects.

Choose round objects and shapes. Hang balloons responsibly and ecologically. Have more round shades for lamps or round tables. Get a bubble machine. Have images of lollipops, pom-poms and dresses or scarfs with polka dots.

Add fun and playful things and puzzles around your home or office to prime you that you can solve problems and have fun. Get a photo of a treehouse.

Use photos of times when you were happy, playful and joyful ie birthday parties, any celebration, holidays, etc

Get a trampoline. Warning, be careful, unfortunately, lots of people injure themselves when trampolining.

Add puzzle time – have a 1000-piece puzzle on the go somewhere for the whole family to complete, whenever they feel like this stress-relieving family project.

Find pictures and posters of cherry blossom, hot air balloons, swimming pools, ice cream cones with sprinkles, fireworks and so on. Other happy images are paintings or posters with landscapes with activity and people, a beach with people having fun and beach balls, seasides with boats, lakes with boats, etc. The images or posters to avoid: any dramatic, stark landscapes, waterfalls, sharp or stark mountain ranges or mountains, sunsets, autumn and winter scenes (except fun activities with snow).

Add symmetry and balance to your home or workplace. Include fractal pictures and nature.

Add window plants boxes with very bright flowers, so others can be made happy.

Jumping – a measure of joy

Summary

Although happiness and joy can be perceived differently by different people – ultimately they point in the same direction of positive experiences, expectations and affects that make people feel better about themselves and life in general. When we feel happy and joyful we also by association and expectation feel more hopeful, positive and abundant. Change how you look at the world and our place in it by adding joy and objects that represent it and make the world a more delightful place.

And love your home and give it a hug

Feng Shui Tips for 2015
The Year of the Wood Goat (Sheep / Ram) starts on 19 February 2015 (it finishes on 8 February 2016 which is the start of the Fire Monkey Year)

Is 2015 the Year of the Goat, Sheep or Ram?
There is no consensus on the naming of the actual animal that represents this year – goat, sheep or ram (although most feng shui experts agree it’s the Year of the Goat). But according to the five elements theory, it is very definitely a yin wood year. Personally, I think that at this time we are in need of a strong goat energy – so we can climb mountains and look around to get a clear healthy perspective on what is happening in the world. Now more than ever we need people (especially leaders) who have the big picture, people who are not restricted to the detail but can see what is happening in the world on the many different levels: environmental, social, financial, political, historic, spiritual, personal and so on.

What are the qualities and tendencies of the Year of the Wood Goat?
In the orient, the goat is considered an auspicious animal, so the Year of the Goat brings promise and prosperity. Consider some of the goat qualities: vitality, virility, curiosity, sturdiness, endurance, guardianship, independence … Goats love to climb – representing progress and achievement. Goats will move around a lot and can ‘reach those places other animals can’t reach’ (just think of them balancing at impossible angles and elevations on cliffs and mountaintops). Goats approach a precipice with ease and enthusiasm.

The Chinese calendar works on a 60-year cycle, so the two previous years of ‘yin wood goat’ were in 1955 and 1895. Both years were marked by famous peace treaties (the Sino Japan Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, and in 1955 the Warsaw Pact, the Baghdad Pact, the start of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization). 1955 was also the year that West Germany joined NATO. They were also marked by conflicts and wars, for example 1955 saw the start of the Vietnam war between North and South Vietnam – a war which lasted until US troops finally withdrew from South Vietnam in 1975.

Famous people born in the previous year of the yin wood goat (1955) include Tim Berners-Lee, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Nicolas Sarkozy, Whoopi Goldberg, Bruce Willis and John Grisham.

8 top feng shui tips for 2015 – the Year of the Goat / Sheep / Ram

1) Have an image of a goat somewhere in your home or office

To connect and benefit from the energy of the goat have an image or little statue of a goat. Search (online) for and print out an image of a goat – or find a goat card or magazine picture. The ideal place for it is in the wealth corner of your home or office or desk (see area 2 in the bagua below). Have an image of a goat on your mobile phone or as wallpaper background on your computer. Put a model of a goat on a shelf (a children’s farm animal will do the trick) or if you’re into Lego get this nano sheep block.

Swatch for Chinese New Year 2015

2) Check your personal bagua for 2015

As well as having a general characteristic for everyone, each year will have a specific effect on individuals depending on when they were born. To find out what the specific focus of this year is for you, look at the two charts below. The bagua shows the different areas of your home, room or office. Below that, find the year of your birth on the 9 Star Ki Chart and look at the top of the column to find your number (eg 1952 is 3 Wood, relating to well-being, balance, power and the present; 1995 is 5 Earth, relating to projects, children, creativity and the future).

The number relates to the area on the bagua which will show you the aspects of your life which will be enhanced this year, and if by any chance this is also a wood year for you, these aspects will be further heightened. You might like to place an additional image or model of a goat in this area, or decorate it positively in some way meaningful to you.

The bagua chart for 2015 looks like this

Bagua for 2015 – imagine this is a plan of your home, room or office, as you go in through the door on this side

9 Star Ki Chart

The star chart is derived from the following calculation: add all the digits of the date of your birth until you end up with one digit and then subtract that number from 11. For example, if you were born in 1988, 1+9+8+8=26 and then 2+6 = 8 and then 11-8=3, so 3 is your star number and in 2015 your star is in the middle of the bagua (well-being, balance, power, the present). If your star is number 2 then it will be particularly favoured in this ‘2’ year and in 2015 it is good to focus on your wealth and prosperity as you appreciate all the blessings your life brings.

3) Clear your past history (karma) – map your family tree

Since the Year of the Goat is about getting perspective on your life, check your past and clear any blockages there. This will allow for a better future. One way of doing this is to build a family tree chart and look for any ancestors who might have had problems. You might know of someone or something in particular, or if you can dowse, then dowse for people with problems which may have an effect on you. Then sit quietly and send them positive energy and love, healing, forgiveness, gratitude, etc. If you can’t identify anyone in particular, then send positive energy to them all! Honour your ancestors. Enhance the effect by placing a few nice photos of your family around – or in the family area of your home.

Drink birch water from birch trees

4) How to boost your wood element (health)? Tap into trees and nature

• Connect with nature more. 2015 – the Year of the Goat – has the energy of wood/trees in the five elements cycle (the others are earth, fire, water and metal). Wood relates to your health and growth and the wood element has the uplifting and outgoing energy of trees. Spend more time in nature. The benefits of the restorative effects of nature are well established (biophilia). Walk barefoot (read about the benefits of grounding /earthing). Connect to trees. Plant some trees (birch is perfect because it grows fast and then you can juice it). Drink tree juices, for example birch tree water / or maple water. If you’re living in a town or city and you can’t spend much time in nature, the next best thing you can do is to just imagine being in nature, in birch woods, walking in the mountains, etc. Research suggests that imagining nature (or anything else) actually has a similar effect on your body and mind as being in that environment. (So be careful what you think about!)

• Breathe (breathe better!) Air or the wind element in feng shui (feng shui means wind-water) is an important reminder of the importance of good breathing. According to research into HRV (heart rate variability, one the best ways to predict health), the best way to breathe is: breathe in for five seconds and then immediately breathe out for five seconds, without a pause. This type of breathing syncs your breath with the rhythm of your blood pressure which will bring many health benefits.

• Drink water. The water part of feng shui is another important reminder that hydration is one of the most important aspects of health. Drink water, first thing in the morning – and on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes before each meal. Learn more about the importance of hydration and watch this informative video about the importance of drinking water.

• Colour. The colour of the element wood/tree is green but the colour for 2015 according to Pantone is marsala. Have either of these colours around you – or buy and wear articles of clothing in green or marsala (a warm reddish brown).

• Protect yourself from electromagnetic pollution. Electro-smog is now recognised as one of the top environmental pollutants and stressors. Minimise the exposure to electromagnetic pollution (dirty electricity), especially during your sleep. Make your bedroom electro-smog free, as much as possible. Learn more about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation. You can also protect and strengthen your aura with Pimat – energy regenerator.

• Connect to the Earth’s heartbeat, the Schumann resonance. Grounding or earthing is now being recognised as a simple way to improve your health. Amount of Schumann resonance in your environment can be a predictor of your the life force (chi) and of your home or workplace. Abundance of Schumann resonance in your home/office can boost your immunity and help combat electromagnetic smog and geopathic stress. Learn more about Schumann waves / resonance and get Helios3 – Schumann resonance generator

5) How to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2015 – the Year of the Goat – 19 February 2015?

The Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated for a few days, so there is plenty of time to do something meaningful and fun. Do something to celebrate and connect to the new energy of the Year of the Goat. Have some Chinese food (see point 8 about the Yauatcha restaurant in London), wear something brand new, get a new wallet, read about your Chinese animal sign and how to navigate through 2015, etc. Remember your sign is also related to an element ie water, wood, fire, earth or metal, so for example you can be a fire horse or wood horse which was the sign for 2014. Read specifically about your animal sign in relation to your element.

6) Have a vision for 2015

Get a clear perspective of what you want to achieve in 2015. Spend some time thinking about what is important for you. Write down all your key values in order of importance, for example: 1. health, 2. love, 3. family, 4. world peace, 5. prosperity, etc.
Also, make your list of goals for 2015. You can make a bagua collage for 2015, either writing in words or representing pictorially (drawing or cut out pictures) what is important to you in each area. For example, if traveling is important – write down a few (new and old) places you want to visit in 2015 and place some photos or images from those places in your travel corner. If wealth is important, place something relevant in your wealth corner eg get a new and bigger money plant (jade, crassula ovate); plan and take your first steps to financial independence and freedom (get Anthony Robbins’ ebook: Money: Master the Game – 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom). And have a plan for achieving your goals (read tip number 7 below).

Mercury retrograde in 2015 – be extra careful during these times
Mercury’s retrograde periods can cause our plans (especially travel) to go awry.
8) 2015 has the vibration of the digit eight – the vibration and symbol of wealth and infinite life

• Lucky 8. When you add digits in 2015 it adds up to 8. In many cultures, number eight is considered lucky. In Chinese, the number eight rhymes with the character for wealth so Chinese establishments always try to include the digit eight in their telephone number, for example, a very successful Yauatcha restaurant in London has this telephone number for bookings: +44 20 7494 8888. (Next time you visit Yauatcha, look out for all the ways they have enhanced their positive feng shui.) For yourself, see if you can add a form of ‘8’ to your signature, or use more loops (in letters such as ‘s’, ‘j’, ‘f’, ‘b’, g’, ‘q’) in your handwriting.
• Print out this Chinese character for wealth (财富) – or simply write the figure 8 on a piece of paper – and place it in your wallet. More Chinese characters for wealth, prosperity, etc

• Get some octagonally shaped things and objects with the digit 8, for example: mirrors, coasters, glasses, clocks, lamps, etc. You can also get this octagonal box for your desk – place it in the wealth corner (the top left corner). Or get this Swarovski’s crystal rainbow maker (also available as a double) and stick it on the window (ideally in the wealth corner or south east part of the house). The octagon is a popular shape and powerful symbol in many cultures, for example, Japanese lottery machines are often octagonal and of course in feng shui the trigrams of the bagua are often arranged octagonally.

• Do the infinity walk (walk in the shape of the infinity figure – an 8 on its side – in a calm meditative way) or do the infinity walk in your mind or move your eyes following the shape of the infinity figure with eyes open or closed (start by looking up to the left as if you are starting to draw the small letter ‘a’).

Do any ritual that will make you feel good

You don’t have to do all of the feng shui rituals mentioned here. Remember, if a particular feng shui ritual doesn’t make you feel better – don’t do it! Feng shui is very practical and adaptable. In short, feng shui = intention + your energy + ritual and intention is the most important thing (followed by your attitude or energy and then the ritual). So think about what you want to achieve in 2015, and choose those of the suggestions above which you think will enhance your purpose and achievement. The earlier you do them, the better, but you can do them, or redo them, at any time during this exciting Year of the Goat.

From a psychological and evolutionary point of view the new year is an important marker of transition. All cultures have some kind of rituals to mark any major cyclical change. Here are some top feng shui tips from all over the world that you can use on the 1st of January. (Please note that Chinese observe also their own new year which is based on the lunar calendar – please check this blog for another post about the Chinese New Year which starts on 31 January 2014 – the year of the horse). Check out these eight simple and very practical feng shui tips for the New Year.

1. Wear something brand new on the 1st of January 2014
Anything you like will do: underwear, socks, a scarf, etc. If you have the time get something in the colour for 2014 which is radiant orchid then do it. But don’t worry if you can’t, the feng shui tip number 6 below is another way to get that colour into your life and enhance your chi.

Radiant orchid in fashion for 2014

I like these Converse ALL STAR trainers

Radiant orchid Converse ALL STAR trainers

2. Go out and do something exciting
Even if it’s just going for walk or to a restaurant, etc. This is to embed and embrace a new positive and outgoing energy of the new year. Do something completely new and different ie walk to a different part of the park, buy a new book in a bookshop (I’ll be downloading ebooks on my Kindle but I’ll buy this amazing book on interior design by Alidad – The Timeless Home, who will be speaking at the Feng Shui Society conference on 17 May 2014), go to see a new art exhibition.

3. Get a new doormat for you home (or change something around the front door) Or just add something new to your home (for example, new towels or cushions in the radiant orchid, etc)
You could use the colour for 2014 is radiant orchid.

Add some cushions to your home in radiant orchid colour

4. Set some new goals for yourself for the new year
Write it down by hand or on your mobile device. Name it 2014 GOALS or something similar that has meaning to you. A few days before the 1st of January it’s a good idea to remember all the things that happened to you in the previous year – remember in yin and yang terms ‘all is good’. I personally, just look at my photos on my iPhone and that usually brings all the memories…

5. For prosperity you can put some brand new banknotes in your wallet.
Or better still, get a new wallet for the new year.

Place some new banknotes in your wallet for prosperity in 2014

Radiant Orchid colour for 2014 as a wallpaper on iPhone

6. Use mobile phone screen / wallpaper for feng shui rituals.
Your mobile phone is a perfect virtual feng shui environment for uploading images to help you to manifest what you want or what you’re focusing or working on. The same applies to your computer screen. Be careful how you use this powerful virtual environment. I once use some photos of tropical islands (as my screen saver) with the intention of going on a holiday there and in three months I ended up living in Barbados for one year.
Start with just a plain radiant orchid screen. Download the radiant orchid colour for 2014 for your mobile phone background or check the colour specs for radiant orchid.

7. Remember what you’re doing on the New Year’s eve and the 1st of January 2014
Take some photos of the activities of that day. Make it memorable. It will help to remember things at the end of 2014. In feng shui, remembering the past is very important. That’s the origins of feng shui and how it all started. Feng shui initially was used to find auspicious burial places to ensure that ancestors would rest in peace. The feng shui wisdom states that the bigger the past the bigger the future.

Space clearing is one of the top feng shui remedies for improving almost anything

8. Space clear your home for the new year
As one of the top general and all-purpose feng shui tips, space clearing is the ideal way to finish the year and clear the way for new opportunities and adventures in 2014. Since you might be buying some new stuff for the new year, get rid of some old stuff before. Let go of the things that you don’t need to make space for new things to come into your life. Use the space clearing mist to shift energies in your home or workplace. Another way is to clean all the door knobs in your home.

To sum up
The most important thing is to do something new for the new year. If you can’t do some of those feng shui tips on the 1st of January you can do them during the week. The energy of the new year last for a week or so. Have fun. Start the new year well and live well.

Don’t worry if you haven’t done any of these tips you’ll have another chance when the Chinese New Year which starts on 31 January 2014. Check my blog for the feng shui tips for the Chinese New Year later in January 2014

Feng shui formula and how feng shui works

At its simplest, and the most fundamental leve,l feng shui works like this:

FENG SHUI = INTENTION + ENERGY (relationship/connection) + RITUAL

Feng shui rituals

Percentage-wise, the importance of your intention (what you want) is 30%, your energy and connection is another 50%, and the ritual is only 20%. The ritual is the servant of your intention. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what you do but HOW you do it. For example, if you want to improve your relationship or find a new partner, you could hang a chewing gum in the relationship corner of your bedroom, and it will work. Of course, it’s better to place something nice and beautiful and thematic, such as a heart prismatic crystal or a romantic picture. Be very clearabout what you want. You need to be specific enough and open at the same time about your goal and purpose.

INTENTION: Goals and purposes

Please note the difference between your goals and your purposes. For example, your goal might be to run a successful online business. But your purpose will be to 1) set up a website 2) optimise with SEO 3) build a brand 4) build a strong community online around your brand, etc, etc. So the goal is the final result, and the purpose is the steps you’ll take to get there. Another example: your goal is to win/finish the London Marathon, and your purpose is to run 30 minutes every morning for the next three months to prepare.

SMART criteria
Learn how to set up a SMART purpose (Specific + Measurable + Achievable + Real + Timed) and write it down (which is always the first step in manifesting your intentions, from the virtual reality of your mind to your immediate physical reality) and then do some feng shui to optimise your environment to help you with that purpose. Knowing what you want and how is half of the success.

ENERGY Your energy (chi) and your relationship and connection to the life force

If your energy level is low, you might have trouble manifesting your goals. With a strong personal energy, you don’t have to put much effort into your intention or the feng shui ritual. Sometimes, a weak intention and minimal feng shui ritual work better since subliminally, you’re not so attached to it. Your energy is a link between your intention and the ritual. It is the relationship and the meaning-making between the virtual and physical worlds that will make it work.

“I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.” Niels Bohr, Danish Nobel Prize winner in Physics

How to boost your energy/chi
• Your values (what is important to you) are key energetic drivers so figure out what are your values. Write them down in order of importance. For example, 1. Health 2. Love 3. Family 4. Success 5. Reputation, etc. If what you want is not in your values list, then you might have problems in manifesting it. It’s very revealing that the most successful and wealthy businesspeople place ‘money’ quite high on their value list.
• The feng shui of your home is a prime environment where you can boost your energy. Check your home for sick building syndrome aspects such as geopathic stress, electromagnetic pollution, etc, and all the usual feng shui things.
• Look after yourself and build your chi through organic foods, exercise and meditation.
• Learn how to manage stress through meditation (Big Mind), the power of letting go and tapping / EFT (emotional freedom technique).
• Learn how to become luckier – that is to be at the right place, at the right time, doing the right things. There is a scientific way to get lucky. HOW? (Hint: you need to be in the right lucky mindset.

The way to hang the horseshoe is up like the letter U, so it works like a container for your luck.

RITUAL Feng shui rituals

Some feng shui rituals work better than others because they have a stronger morphic field, i.e., a lot of people believe in and use them. For example, hanging a horseshoe above the door has been practised for centuries, and it works. “I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.” said Niels Bohr, Danish Nobel Prize winner in Physics, when asked why he has a horseshoe above his door. Beliefs are perceptions about how things work, and the science behind how beliefs work is called the placebo effect.

To sum up

1) Decide what you want and how.
2) Write it down as a SMART purpose.
3) Anchor the intention in your environment with a feng shui ritual that is representative in some way of your intention. Read some feng shui tips for ideas.
4) Do some first steps in order to manifest it (using your SMART purpose) and follow through until you realise your goal. Never give up. Determination, persistence and patience will get you there.

One for the simplest feng shui ways to change the energy in your home to improve your career prospects is to change something around the front door. The front door is the transition area between your private life and public / work life. If you’re working from home it will still work since you’ll be doing it with a specific intention.

Radiant orchid door

1. Change the colour of the front door
There are different ways to decide on the colour for the door.
• You can use the colour for the year (in 2014 it’s radiant orchid)
• You can calculate the energy for the career zone in the bagua for that year or month.
• Or just follow your heart and decide on a colour that will energies you when you go out (and come in).

2. Get a new doormat
Again you can use the above ways to decide on the colour or just find a doormat that means something. You can also place something meaningful underneath the doormat. In many cultures, people bury some coins (ideal number is eight so for example, eight 1$/£ coins) and offerings for spirits outside the house.

3. Hang something on the door
Temporarily, you can stick a photo / picture or something that will stimulate and energise your career. Classic images or metaphors for career zone are rivers since they symbolise movement and new positive energy. Avoid any images that are too dramatic ie waterfalls or turbulent waves, etc and on the other hand anything that is too still or stagnant. Read the feng shui tip 5 below.

4. Hang a wind-chime above the door
Make sure it sounds nice and it’s not a nuisance. There are different types of windchimes and sound is one of the best ways to moderate the flow of energy (chi) in any environment. Depending on what you want to achieve you can use Feng Shui Five Element Theory to choose between different energies for your goals. Here’s the chart for all the elements and the corresponding materials for wind-chimes:
WATER = glass (blue) windchimes
WOOD = wooden or bamboo (green) windchimes
FIRE = wooden wind chime painted red
EARTH = ceramic (yellow) windchimes
METAL = metal (silver or gold) winchimes
If you’re not sure what type of windchime to use consult your feng shui practitioner or contact me.

Horsehoes for prosperity

5. Place some meaningful images or things around the door
In Hindu culture people place images of Lakshmi and Ganesh for protection and prosperity as part of Vastu Shastra practice which is a Hindu version of feng shui. Chinese hang strings of coins around the door and place lucky cats (I like this solar powered lucky cat). Greeks hang the evil eye symbol for protection. In the west people hang the horseshoe above the door and the ‘correct’ way is to hang them like the letter U to keep the prosperity in like a container.

“I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.” said Niels Bohr, Danish Nobel Prize winner in Physics, when asked why he has a horseshoe above his door.
