One for the simplest feng shui ways to change the energy in your home to improve your career prospects is to change something around the front door. The front door is the transition area between your private life and public / work life. If you’re working from home it will still work since you’ll be doing it with a specific intention.

Radiant orchid door

1. Change the colour of the front door
There are different ways to decide on the colour for the door.
• You can use the colour for the year (in 2014 it’s radiant orchid)
• You can calculate the energy for the career zone in the bagua for that year or month.
• Or just follow your heart and decide on a colour that will energies you when you go out (and come in).

2. Get a new doormat
Again you can use the above ways to decide on the colour or just find a doormat that means something. You can also place something meaningful underneath the doormat. In many cultures, people bury some coins (ideal number is eight so for example, eight 1$/£ coins) and offerings for spirits outside the house.

3. Hang something on the door
Temporarily, you can stick a photo / picture or something that will stimulate and energise your career. Classic images or metaphors for career zone are rivers since they symbolise movement and new positive energy. Avoid any images that are too dramatic ie waterfalls or turbulent waves, etc and on the other hand anything that is too still or stagnant. Read the feng shui tip 5 below.

4. Hang a wind-chime above the door
Make sure it sounds nice and it’s not a nuisance. There are different types of windchimes and sound is one of the best ways to moderate the flow of energy (chi) in any environment. Depending on what you want to achieve you can use Feng Shui Five Element Theory to choose between different energies for your goals. Here’s the chart for all the elements and the corresponding materials for wind-chimes:
WATER = glass (blue) windchimes
WOOD = wooden or bamboo (green) windchimes
FIRE = wooden wind chime painted red
EARTH = ceramic (yellow) windchimes
METAL = metal (silver or gold) winchimes
If you’re not sure what type of windchime to use consult your feng shui practitioner or contact me.

Horsehoes for prosperity

5. Place some meaningful images or things around the door
In Hindu culture people place images of Lakshmi and Ganesh for protection and prosperity as part of Vastu Shastra practice which is a Hindu version of feng shui. Chinese hang strings of coins around the door and place lucky cats (I like this solar powered lucky cat). Greeks hang the evil eye symbol for protection. In the west people hang the horseshoe above the door and the ‘correct’ way is to hang them like the letter U to keep the prosperity in like a container.

“I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.” said Niels Bohr, Danish Nobel Prize winner in Physics, when asked why he has a horseshoe above his door.

Feng shui wealth corners in homes, workplaces according to bagua matrix to boost prosperity and wealth creation

What is a wealth corner? Where is your wealth area in you home or workplace?

According to the bagua model, a space in your home and workplace can signify your wealth domain, and sometimes called a wealth corner or wealth area or fortunate blessings. A wealth corner is a semiotic space where you anchor your intentions for wealth creation, luck and prosperity with feng shui rituals.

Feng shui classic money plant (Crassula ovata)

How to locate your wealth area in your home or workplace?

There are three ways to signify wealth in your home and workplace:
1) According to classical, compass feng shui school, it is the south-east part of your property or room or plot of land.
2) According to three gate bagua matrix (see below), it is the top left furthermost corner from a door to your home or room or office or land.
3) According to virtual, archetypical feng shui, your wealth corner is – where you decide it is and where it is most convenient or appropriate. Your wealth creation intentions will space condition your home or workplace. Dr William A. Tiller’s studies and experiments have proven that human consciousness ‘changes space’ and ‘conditions space’ so feng shui, space clearing is space conditioning. In short, feng shui is space conditioning (there are many definitions of feng shui). The essence of feng shui is intention + energy + ritual. If you’re not sure which perspective to use, read about the difference between the compass bagua, three gate bagua and virtual bagua.

Wealth is an archetypical and morphic resonance field that is not dependent on a corner or direction (because archetypes are impersonal) so – it’s where you want it to be (ideally everywhere in your home and workplace, not just in your wealth corner or south-east).

A quick question: do you want to have wealth vibe everywhere or just in one corner of your home? If you want the wealth, luck and prosperity vibe embedding your whole home and workplace – then choose the virtual, archetypical bagua. Of course, you can use all three at the same time, if that’s appropriate.

“The power of intention alters matter – scientific proof that human intention raises local symmetry in the substratum of space.” William A. Tiller, PhD (Physicist, Stanford University)

What is bagua model?
Bagua model is a way of reading your life through a lens of nine basic domains of life (such as career, relationships, family, wealth, luck, and so on) and the projecting physical representations of these domains or values into the immediate environment. Wealth is one such domain and in physical space it can be assigned to either/and: south-east of the space, the top left space from any entrance and any space you assign to be the wealth domain. Read more about the difference between the compass bagua, three gate bagua and virtual bagua.

Feng shui bagua model – according to door and compass orientations

How to activate your wealth domain?

There are many ways to activate and boost your wealth domain. Some simple and universal feng shui remedies to boost your wealth creation are:
1) Money plants (there are two types: classic and Indian)
2) Light and mirrors
3) Aquariums and fish ie koi carp
4) Images and symbols of prosperity ie fish (koi carp
5) Water features
6) Crystals
7) Bird baths or bird feeders for outside
8) Anything that signifies wealth and prosperity to you

There are many other feng shui boosting rituals and remember feng shui works best when is person-centred where you customise the feng shui solutions to your needs and preferences. Follow your aesthetic and cultural preferences where you will feel comfortable with your chosen feng shui remedy. If your finances feel stuck, it’s recommended to do some space clearing and get rid of any clutter that might be blocking the energy flow. If you’re not sure, don’t do it or better still call your feng shui consultant. Read about the difference between the compass bagua and three gate bagua

Missing the wealth corner?
In some feng shui school of thought which I DO NOT subscribe to, because they’re disempowering – it’s suggested that if the shape of the property is like a reverse ‘L’ then the wealth corner might be missing (ie the south-east part of the property or the top left side, from the front door). In psychology, it is called a false problem. Unfortunately, once you’re exposed to a false problem, a nocebo effect kicks in and you’re primed negatively and you feel like you need to do something about it and counter it by a positive action ie the placebo effect. Firstly, your wealth doesn’t depend on the so called wealth corner. Secondly, who’s in charge of your wealth? You or some imaginary space? So, don’t give away your power to external factors.

But if you want a few quick ‘fixes’ then, energiese the wealth corner with lights, mirrors, crystals, money plants, symbols of koi carps, etc. Or call me for a feng shui consultation.

Rituals for prosperity and wealth creation

All cultures have developed all kinds of rituals for wealth creation and prosperity. See which prosperity rituals resonate with your values and beliefs and see how they work for you. In essence, any ritual or activity that is performed with intention of improving your finances will work. But remember that rituals are servants of your intentions and values. Rituals as such have no intrinsic power so you can edit and adjust them to your needs and situation. Do something now. Read more about why people believe in rituals

Space clearing
It is worthwhile to space clear your home and especially the wealth corner. Get rid of any clutter. Add something fresh and new.

If in the past, finances have been bad or you can’t let go of something that’s already passed, it’s also worth performing a ritual of purification. Research shows that journaling is a great way of downloading any negative thoughts and worries or concerns and letting them go, so they don’t pop up unnecessarily in our minds and affect our performance. Write down all your concerns and worries and you can either burn it, bury it, shred it or flash it down the loo. After the ritual, it is good to wash your hands with water. Having a shower can symbolically and physically clean your aura.

Wallet
If you’re still using a wallet, it’s worthwhile using it as a ritual. Wallets are symbolic of money and it’s good to review the contents of your wallet. Throw out of it all that is not needed. Arrange the cards and banknotes. You could refrain from spending money for the rest of the day. This will ensure that they do not leak through your fingers and that you can control your spending. Good time to perform this simple ritual is any time you need a change and shift or the New Year Day or the Autumn equinox or any other equinox when the seasons change. Getting a new wallet at the beginning of the year is also a great ritual to start the year with the prosperity intentions.

Adding symbols of prosperity and wealth (words or images) in your wallet is another great way of reminding yourself that life is abundant and prosperous. For example, you can add a Tarot card with the suit of pentacles which cover material aspects of life including abundance, prosperity, work, business, trade, property, money and other material possessions. You can just write a word/s related to your financial values such as WEALTH, MONEY, PROSPERITY, etc and put it in your wallet. Another very simple way to boost your trust and confidence in your ability to manifest prosperity is to fold four times £50 banknote (or the largest domination in your local currency) so it has eight section which symbolically relates to number 8 or infinity sign which means multiplying your money.

Koi carps – prosperity and good luck symbol
Fish, and specifically koi carps are representative of wealth and wealth creation. In most cultures, fish is symbolic of wealth and embody the life force or chi which is the key concept in feng shui. For example, in Polish and other cultures, it’s customary to put a scale of carp fish in the wallet (usually from the Christmas carp) for prosperity for the next year. Koi carps are prosperity fish in feng shui so you can just put a photo of koi carps in your wallet.

8 koi carps +1 black by Lea Minshull & Feng Shui Images

Fish aquarium, fish ponds and water features in general are ways to attract positive energy which can help you with wealth creation. If that’s not possible, a valid way is to have images, photos and pictures of fish or water features. Find a nice, vibrant photo of koi carps and place it accordingly. Examples of good koi carp photos are below. I also sell, a 3D photo of koi carps (see below) in our feng shui shop.

Koi has an archetypical (morphic resonance field) of energy of prosperity, wealth, money so, ultimately, it doesn’t matter much where you hang it – because it will imbued your whole home and workplace with prosperity (not just the wealth corner or one direction).

Feng shui fish: koi carps 3D photo – for prosperity and luck

Other prosperity, wealth and luck symbols or perceptions
There are many symbols for prosperity and wealth. Pick the ones that resonate with you, your life style and your interior design preferences. All cultures have developed ways of priming for growth, prosperity, success and luck. There are many examples, such as fish or koi, money plants, water features, gods and deities (Ganesh and Lakshmi in Hinduism), animals (lucky cat), precious metal such as gold or silver, precious stones, diamonds, art and so on. The point is that there are many ways, lifestyles and forms of living that are worth living that have wealth as an intrinsic value.

For example, for some people, wealth is their children as it can be seen in many cultures where children have been a kind of retirement fund or life insurance. For others, health is wealth (interestingly enough it’s only one letter difference between them) and any physical things they own that relate to health is also wealth – for example, a juice, an organic foam mattress, a water filter, an air purifier, etc. For me, books are wealth (and I’ve spend a small fortune building a library of over 20+ thousand books – most digitised now). Art is wealth for me and I have art pieces everywhere. Time, creativity and freedom to do what I want to do is wealth for me. And for some, wealth is just currency ie the number of pounds or dollars in their bank account.

“I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.”
Niels Bohr, Danish Nobel Prize winner in Physics

In short, wealth is many things for many different people. Embody your wealth with different things you own and different things you do (for example, doing charity work is wealth and can boost your wealth). Ultimately, going beyond traditional or cultural definitions or perceptions of wealth will make you the wealthiest person and help you understand what really wealth is. (If there is one best place to start wealth creation is to boost your luck with the best, scientific book on it ie The Luck Factor – get it now.)

Candles and fire rituals
If we need more radical measures, it is good to light a green candle, then take the banknote, roll it up and tie it with a red ribbon – pronouncing words: “Throughout spring/summer/autumn/winter and the rest of the year I have abundance” you should wrap the money in gold foil, put it in a tight container and store it in the freezer. Such frozen cash will make our wallet and account always have funds for the things we need.

Nature
Plants symbolise growth and the wealth area (according to the bagua model) is governed by the element tree/wood (according to the five element theory). There are two money plants: classic money plant (Crassula ovata) which you can see at the top of this blog or an Indian money plant (Epipremnum aureum) which is also an air cleansing plant. I recommend to have both.

Indian money plant (Epipremnum aureum)

Equinox – the time of change and renewals
Most cultures have rituals to celebrate the change of seasons during equinoxes. Whether you believe in rituals or not, the equinoxes should be spent in nature. Go to the forest, park or green space – take a look at nature and remind yourself about constant change. Charge your batteries for the next season.

Other factors affecting your wealth
I work in a holistic way and if it is the wealth that you want to improve, there are literally hundred of environmental aspects that can impact your wealth creation in a more significant way – than just one bit of your home ie the so called wealth corner/fortunate blessing area. In short, your wealth doesn’t depend on your wealth corner. It helps to have the wealth vibe working for your to maximise your luck and prosperity and you also need to minimise the environmental factors that drain your energy and affect your prosperity in different ways.

Some key environmental factors that can affect your wealth are:

Geopathic stress

Electro-smog, wifi and dirty electricity

Lack of deep sleep because your bedroom is not optimised

Low energy of your home or workplace

Clutter

Lack of prosperity anchors, symbols and primers

Invest in a feng shui consultation for your home and workplace

What is a feng shui bagua model?

Bagua is a feng shui energetic and metaphoric matrix, a code or simulation for space harmonisation and manifestation. The bagua maps the primary aspects of our lives and values (career, relationships, wealth and so on). Simply put, bagua is a vision board for your life. It is also a map used in feng shui to locate the areas in our homes and workplaces that we can use to represent these values and life aspects. Bagua is an amplifier and a mirror of our own values, needs, wants and desires (it’s not a telescope). Balancing, activating and enhancing chi/energy in these physical areas (with lighting, pictures, plants, furniture, objects, etc) can then improve the corresponding aspects of our lives. It can be thought of as an energetic matrix of energy flow in any space. In short, bagua is an imaginary or conceptual tool or method for organising, physicalising, codifying and activating your values and manifesting your dreams and goals.

Think about bagua as your vision board.

The history behind the bagua model
Bagua is a magic square or Luo Shu and is based on trigrams from I-Ching, the Book of Changes (in both early heaven and latter heaven sequence).

Bagua is based on magic square or Luo Shu

How to use bagua map/matrix

To use the bagua, place it over a plan of your home/room/workspace in such a way that the door to your flat/home/room/office is at the bottom of the page in the areas of knowledge, career and helpful friends. This matrix can be used on other things such as your business card, your desk, website.

“We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” Winston Churchill

Understand the difference between the two feng shui bagua schools. Two types of baguas: classic and western
There are two basic feng shui bagua schools: 1) traditional or classic compass bagua and 2) three-door gate of chi bagua. Understanding how both baguas developed over time and why will help you make an informed and empowering choice.

1. Classic / traditional compass bagua school

The original bagua concept which was based on compass direction, was an expression of the ancient Chinese mindset which revered the impact of cosmos and stars on their lives and fate. To apply the classical/traditional feng shui bagua map on your home, you need to take a compass reading from the front of your house or apartment. Different compass directions will reflect different aspects of your life. For example, the wealth corner of your home or workplace will be the south-east part of the building and the career aspect will be in the north part of your home/room. See the classic compass bagua below

The compass bagua is restricted to compass directions, therefore, limited in application. On the positive side, if your home or workplace is on different floors, all the areas will be the same, ie overlapping one above the other.

Classical traditional feng shui compass bagua – based on compass directions

2. Three-door gate of chi bagua

The three-door gate of chi bagua is a modern reflection on how empowered we’ve become. The three-door gate of chi was proposed by Professor Lin Yun of Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School of Feng Shui in the US in the mid-eighties. Professor Thomas Lin-Yun took into account that we (with our energies, thoughts, perceptions and values) have the greatest impact on our lives and environment. The three-door gate of chi bagua affirms that it is our energies entering into our spaces that create energetic patterns. It’s an evolutionary shift from a less empowering perspective of outside > in influence to inside > out empowerment. Winston Churchill got it right by saying “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” Not the other way round. So the greatest influence and impact comes from us first. Then the people around us have the second most important influence. And then thirdly, our environment or if you like feng shui affect us. So the order of the magnitude of impact and influence is: us, others, and then feng shui. So if you want to shape your destiny (as opposed to following your fate as the classical, compass bagua suggests), the three-gate bagua is for you.

“I understand that it (feng shui) works whether you believe in it or not.” Niels Bohr, Danish quantum physicist, Nobel Prize winner in Physics

Different areas of your home or workplace will reflect different aspects of your life. According to the three-door gate of chi bagua, the placement of these areas depends on the position of the door. For example, the wealth corner of your home or workplace will be the furthest area on the left from the door to your home/room. See the three-door gate of chi bagua below

The three-door gate of chi western bagua – based on the position of the door

‘Missing corners or spaces’
There is a myth about the 3-door gate bagua that if some areas of the space are kind of ‘missing’ – then you have or might have a problem with that aspect of your life. In my experience, it’s a false problem which will create a false solution. Unfortunately, once you’ve been exposed to this false problem, you’ll need a solution to counter the negative perception (nocebo effect) to feel better about your home or workplace. Basic remedies include placing a mirror to symbolically expand that ‘missing’ space, hanging a crystal, installing lights, etc. The virtual bagua (below) has no such issue; hence it’s a much superior model.

You can apply the bague on the complete floor and each room or space as well, if necessary, but that can make it all very complicated or add more opportunities for placement of feng shui remedies. Three-door gate of chi bagua is dependent on space but less restricted than the compass bagua.

3. Virtual/spiritual/archetypal/symbolic bagua

I’m proposing the next consciousness shift in our perception regarding the energies of the bagua matrix. Instead of worrying which type of bagua to use ie the compass bagua or the three-door gate of chi one – identify which key areas of your life you want to improve, what are your values and surround yourself with symbols and energies reflecting these aspects and values. For example, if wealth is important to you – get a money plant and place it somewhere prominently (ideally near the south-facing window since money plants like the sun) – read more ideas for boosting your wealth domain. If friendship is your value and you want to have more friends, have more photos of existing friends and family around your home – anywhere. If you want to travel and boost the travel area of your home – have maps, posters of places that you want to visit – everywhere. If health is your key value, make your home and workplace healthy by reducing environmental stressors and placing symbols that represent health to you. Virtual bagua is not dependent on space (and time – read below) and therefore more flexible and give you the total freedom as opposed to 3-door or classical baguas (you can’t control the compass directions and most often you won’t be able to change the position of your doors). Read more about bagua model as simulation

‘You can’t use an old map to explore a new world’ – Albert Einstein

The virtual feng shui bagua approach resonates with the quantum physics discovery which states that we as observers influence our environments (observers affect the observation). Also, our values are forces that act as magnifiers and attractors for what’s important to us. Values are archetypical patterns to shape our lives. Bagua will help you focus and anchor your values in your physical environments. The formula for how feng shui work is this: feng shui = intention + energy + ritual. Be clear what you want, have the right positive intention and attitude (energy) and create a physical ritual to will reflect and anchor your values, goals or dreams in your home or workplace. In short, physicalise your dreams, goals and values. Feng shui is a physical affirmation.

Efficiency and timing

“Every kairos is a chronos, but not every chronos is a kairos.” said Hippocrates. So depending on how fast you want to change your life, you might want to choose the bagua model that works best for your speed of change – what’s comfortable for your development. So if you like, a slow, organic change I recommend the modern 3-gate bagua and even the classical one. But if you want fast, almost immediate change – the virtual bagua is for you.

The difference between chronos and kairos is that chronos is quantity, ‘physical’, measurable time ie sequential and linear/horizontal (measured by clocks and calendars), whereas kairos time is quality time, timeless, non-linear/vertical (evaluated by values and archetypes). Obviously, we need both chronos and kairos but in modern times people have lost the notion of kairos time. Chronos is about measuring time in seconds, minutes, days, etc (“What time is it now?”), and kairos is about evaluating it (What is it time for?) and its significance as well as opportunity ie carpe diem time. Kairos can help us ‘control’ our future by being in the flow and by affirming life and chance. Kairos allows us to collapse all possibilities and opportunities in the now moment. (Kairos is a different spelling of the Greek deity Caerus, the god of luck and opportunity). In short, kairos is luck.

I’m still confused about which method to use. Which feng shui bagua school is better?

The choice of the method will affect what sort of power relation you want to have with your home or workplace. Now you understand how both baguas developed and why – which approach resonates best with you. If you want to take control of your life and your home or workplace and carve your destiny – choose the three-door gate of chi bagua or virtual bagua. If the classic compass bagua resonates with you, it doesn’t mean that you want to relinquish your power to the surrounding environment but it will align you more with your fate since fate is dictated by external factors. Development, as defined by Piaget (1951, 1952), is about decreasing egocentrism. Human beings go through well-defined stages of development starting with egocentric, then progressing to ethnocentric, then to world-centric and then to cosmo-centric or integral stages. Depending on where you are in those stages of personal development, you may resonate or choose different modes of bagua model to suit your needs. Reflect on that choice and see if there are good reasons for choosing it. But it could be just because it was the first bagua that you’ve learned about and you got comfortable with it. You can always change your preference. Or you can choose a combination of all the three bagua methods. Modern feng shui is person-centred so choose what works for you.

In my feng shui practice

In my 40+ years feng shui practice I’ve noticed that most people prefer the three-door gate of chi bagua because they resonate with it and want to be empowered. A very small number of individuals prefer the classical compass bagua method – usually because of upbringing, cultural preference and fate-like mindset. Sometimes they choose the compass bagua because that kind of alignment offers the best prospects for their particular house shape and compass orientation (but that is quite rare). Ultimately, there is nothing wrong with using any of those methods but understanding how they got developed helps with an informed choice. Obviously, if your home is facing north, then you don’t have to make any choice since both baguas will overlap.

The problem with classical and 3-door gate bagua is that they’re quite limited, restrictive and very often dogmatic (especially if you read feng shui nonsensical advice online). The virtual bagua overcomes their limitations through include and transcend principle. The qualities of aspects are preserved (career, relationship, wealth, etc domains) and transcend the limitation of space into symbolic representations that can be placed anywhere in your home or workplace.

Also, I want to have the vibe of prosperity in my whole home, not in just one space, the so-called ‘wealth corner’, which is very limiting thinking. When you place a symbol of prosperity with your non-local and non-linear thinking behind it – it works everywhere and every time.

WARNING: Don’t put your life into feng shui

In feng shui, we have a saying “Put feng shui into your life. Don’t put your life into feng shui.” What it means is that if you put your life into feng shui it may run it for you. You can become overly dependent on feng shui advice. You can become too concerned about making the smallest changes in your home or workplace and worried that you may make a mistake. You might create false problems for yourself and become dogmatic. You may have a tendency to blame the environment (feng shui) for your problems instead of looking at the real causes. You may feel disempowered and helpless as well as fearful of life and challenges. Use feng shui as a tool to enhance your life, to add meaningful images and symbols, reduce environmental stressors such as dirty electricity, geopathic stress, electro-smog, etc – to empower and boost your personal and professional life – and that’s what is feng shui for – to help you shape your destiny as opposed to being fated.

Bagua is an imaginary, semiotic tool – a code

Let’s be clear: there is no such a thing as a ‘wealth corner’ or ‘career area’, or ‘relationship area’, etc – they don’t exist as independent entities out there, except in our imagination. The bagua model is just a mental construct and a semiotic marking, a way of codifying space. In feng shui, we use physical space to anchor and help us to focus on our values, needs and wants. The way bagua works is the same as a placebo works ie it helps us to activate and cultivate our innate resources and connects us with the energies of life. There is no right or wrong way of using bagua. One is not better than the other. It depends on where you’re coming from, where you are in your life, at what stage in your personal growth, your preferences, your cultural heritage, your mindset and what works for you.
The Wheel of Life in life coaching – bagua for life

In life coaching, there is a similar concept to bagua, called the wheel of life and it covers more or less the same life domains such as:
• health & fitness
• love & romance
• social life and friendship
• self-wealth
• play & creativity
• spirituality
• sleep & rest
• family
• career & growth
• finances and money
without referencing them in space or environment. They’re mental constructs or values that are important to people. In feng shui, these values are externalised into an environment to give people more clarity and focus, and to help with actualising them.

How to activate different aspects of your bagua

That depends on your needs and wants. There are many feng shui interventions that can be used to do the job. For example, light, plants, water features, elements, symbols, pictures and images and so on. Whatever you choose should resonate with your preferences, your belief system and the deco of your home and workplace. There are no hard rules how to use feng shui remedies for activation of the bagua areas – just use whatever works.

To sum up – you have a choice

It’s all about choice and self-empowerment as well as control. Do you want to analyse and interpret your life or do you want to change and build it? Feng shui bagua model is just a code or map and it’s up to you and your changing circumstances how it’s going to work for you.

Answer these questions:
1) do you want to follow your fate or
2) do you want to shape your destiny?

If you want to follow a traditional feng shui then choose the compass bagua. If you want to empower your life and take control of your environment to choose three-door gate of chi bagua or virtual/spiritual/archetypical bagua. Or combine them all. There is no conflict in using all of them at once if you don’t mind the complexity. There is no right or wrong way of using them, similarly, as Indian or Chinese cuisines are no better than French or Italian ones. It’s up to you, your preference, values, your political orientation, your consciousness and your creativity.

A person-centred feng shui is very clear on this:
1) use what works for you,
2) use what is empowering you
3) use what’s in your control and
4) use whatever helps you grow, develop and thrive.

It offers a structured map of existence through the bagua, a symbolic representation of life’s key domains (such as wealth, health, relationships, and career). This spatial-temporal model is a simulation of sorts — a metaphysical cartography of human potential projected onto physical space. When juxtaposed with Baudrillard’s theory, feng shui’s symbology reveals new dimensions in the philosophical inquiry into simulation, meaning, and the construction of reality.

Feng Shui and the Precession of Symbols

Baudrillard’s idea of the “precession of simulacra” — where signs no longer reflect a real world but precede and determine it — finds a deep resonance in feng shui practice. The bagua functions as a symbolic map imposed upon a home or environment to mirror and influence the energies of life. Although it originates from metaphysical traditions, it now often precedes physical design, determining layout, décor, and psychological orientation before the user engages with the lived reality of a space.

This mirrors Baudrillard’s four stages of simulation:

A faithful reflection of reality (e.g., early feng shui based on direct environmental observation)
A perversion of reality (e.g., symbolic remedies overriding practical interventions)
A pretence of reality with no real referent (e.g., using symbolic enhancements such as golden toads or faux waterfalls in spaces where natural qi is lacking)
A pure simulacrum (e.g., a fully designed feng shui home or virtual space that is only a projection of auspicious symbolism without any natural or energetic authenticity)

Just as Baudrillard writes, “It is dangerous to unmask images, since they dissimulate the fact that there is nothing behind them,” so too might we reflect on feng shui practices that risk substituting symbolism for embodied, mindful interaction with space.

Feng Shui Bagua and position of representation of different life aspects

The Bagua Model as a Simulation of Life

The bagua is itself a powerful simulation. It divides experience into eight life domains (plus the centre, representing health and unity) and projects them across physical space. Each area is mapped with associated elements, colours, shapes, and aspirations — a constructed overlay designed to shape psychological and environmental experience.

In Baudrillardian terms, the bagua does not represent life — it structures life through its symbolic order. For instance, enhancing the ‘wealth’ corner with wood elements or purple colours is not merely an aesthetic act, but a ritualised simulation of prosperity. The physical act is less about function than sign value, paralleling Baudrillard’s observation: “We live in a world where there is more and more information, and less and less meaning.”

Thus, feng shui reveals how humans live within symbolic environments rather than “natural” ones. It reaffirms that human interaction with space is mediated through symbols, intentions, and metaphors — all of which Baudrillard would argue are simulations that may or may not correspond to a real energetic influence.

Hyperreality and the Feng Shui Marketplace

Feng shui has, in some cases, entered a hyperreal phase. As commercialisation spreads through books, online consultations, feng shui products, and digital bagua apps, the distinction between authentic energetic engagement and the simulation of harmony becomes blurred. Homes may be filled with coins, crystals, and cures that no longer relate to the environment’s original qi but function primarily as signs of harmony.

Baudrillard wrote: “Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real.” Similarly, some modern feng shui practices may be presented as symbolic to reassure us that our environments — and lives — are “in order.” The ritual becomes more important than the result, echoing Baudrillard’s critique of the symbolic order: “The simulacrum is true.”

Feng Shui, Technology, and the Simulated Environment

In contemporary practice, feng shui increasingly intersects with smart homes, virtual consultations, and even AI-driven spatial analysis. This shift raises critical questions. Is the virtual application of the bagua as powerful as its physical manifestation? Can qi be assessed through a video call? Baudrillard’s work would suggest that when simulation reaches this degree of abstraction, it no longer refers to any natural energy — it becomes self-referential.

For instance, virtual feng shui consultations may be guided by simulations of simulations — not observation of the natural world but interpretation of uploaded floor plans and digital photographs. This is the fourth stage of simulacra, where feng shui becomes a pure sign system disconnected from the living context. Yet, for many clients, it still feels authentic. And perhaps that feeling itself is the ultimate hyperreal experience.

Quotes Reimagined in Feng Shui Context

“The simulacrum is never that which conceals the truth—it is the truth which conceals that there is none.”

When feng shui becomes about objects rather than intention and energy, this statement warns of ritual without awareness.

“Today abstraction is no longer that of the map… It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal.”

The bagua applied without regard to authentic qi conditions may become just such a hyperreal model.

“We live in a world where there is more and more information, and less and less meaning.”

Modern feng shui faces this danger — of excessive knowledge with diminishing intuitive understanding.

“To simulate is to feign to have what one doesn’t have.”

A wealth corner filled with gold-painted frogs may feign prosperity but not generate it.

Conclusion: Feng Shui Between Sacred Map and Simulation

Feng shui, like many wisdom traditions, walks a delicate path between symbolic structure and experiential reality. Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation offers a provocative lens through which to evaluate whether feng shui remains a spiritual art rooted in embodied harmony or whether it risks becoming a hyperreal system of gestures, signs, and symbolic rituals devoid of their original energetic or cosmological referents.

Yet, simulation is not necessarily falsehood. In both Baudrillard and feng shui, there lies an invitation to reengage with the deeper question: What is real, and what do we project onto reality in order to live with meaning?

Rethinking ‘Missing Areas’ and Symbolic Absolutism

One of the more entrenched interpretations in modern feng shui is the belief that a missing area in the bagua model — such as a gap where the wealth, relationship, or health sector should fall — symbolically signifies a deficiency in that corresponding area of life. Similarly, locations of toilets or storage rooms in perceived “unfavourable” sectors are often cited as inherently problematic. However, this view reflects a symbolic absolutism that borders on superstition rather than grounded practice. There is no empirical evidence from environmental psychology or feng shui research to support the notion that a corner missing from a floor plan directly correlates with misfortune, loss, or deficiency in life outcomes. These claims, while symbolically compelling, risk becoming simulations of problems — what Baudrillard would describe as a false real, an invented issue arising from an overreliance on abstract models rather than lived experience. A “toilet in the wealth corner” is often framed as inherently damaging, yet countless individuals live successful, harmonious lives in such homes. Practitioners and enthusiasts alike must be cautious not to overextend metaphorical interpretations as diagnostic truths. As with any symbolic system, the bagua should be used with discernment, fluidity, and critical reflection — not as a rigid doctrine capable of generating false anxieties about spaces that function perfectly well in reality.

As Gregory Bateson famously observed, “The map is not the territory.” The bagua is a symbolic overlay, a representational tool for perceiving potential patterns — not an absolute mirror of life’s totality. When mistaken for the territory itself, the map ceases to guide and begins to distort.

Symbolic Thinking: A Powerful Tool, Not an Objective Law

Symbolic thinking lies at the heart of feng shui, offering metaphors and representations that help people engage more meaningfully with their environments. Symbols invite reflection, action, and creative adaptation — they are not truths, but mirrors of inner states and cultural archetypes. When symbolic thinking is approached as a tool for dialogue with space rather than as a deterministic system, feng shui becomes a dynamic practice that fosters awareness and agency. However, when symbols are taken as literal, causal mechanisms — when a mirror or a plant is said to singularly “cause” wealth or illness — then the symbolic becomes dogma, and meaning becomes fixed rather than discovered. To preserve the transformative potential of feng shui, we must maintain the symbolic as suggestive, not prescriptive. It is through this interpretive openness that feng shui continues to evolve as both a reflective art and a psychological engagement with place.

The Matrix and the Simulated Home

Baudrillard’s work directly influenced The Matrix (1999), a film that opens with a hidden copy of Simulacra and Simulation. The Matrix represents a digital world so totalising and convincing that its inhabitants do not know they are living in a simulation. In feng shui terms, this could be likened to a symbolic home so curated, so full of metaphors for success, love, and health, that it no longer reflects or responds to actual energy. Just as the Matrix is a world of illusion passed off as real, the symbolic feng shui home may offer a comforting fiction that masks a deeper energetic disconnection. It challenges practitioners to ask: Are we designing real spaces that resonate with qi, or are we trapped within symbolic designs that simulate harmony without embodying it?

Perception as Projection: Neuroscience, Reality, and Feng Shui

Emerging research in neuroscience supports a perspective long familiar to practitioners of feng shui — that perception is not a passive reception of the world, but an active construction by the brain. Rather than recording reality objectively, the brain generates a predictive model based on past experience, context, and expectation (Friston, 2010; Clark, 2013). In feng shui terms, this means that our experience of space is shaped as much by what we bring to it — beliefs, symbols, intentions — as by its physical form. Studies suggest that up to 90 percent of visual perception is based on internal predictions rather than incoming sensory data (Bar, 2009). This process is deeply subjective and interpretive, much like the symbolic overlay of the bagua map. From this view, a feng shui arrangement does not just affect us environmentally but psychologically, activating internal models of harmony, protection, or abundance. As neuroscientist Anil Seth explains, we are constantly “hallucinating” our world, and when we agree on our hallucinations, we call it reality (Seth, 2021). Thus, feng shui can be seen as a conscious engagement with the brain’s natural tendency to construct meaning — offering symbolic structure to help align inner expectation with outer form.
