<p class="p1"><span class="s1"><strong>• Do not keep a phone turned on next to your body</strong> all day, but if you must, face the front of the phone (the keypad) toward your body, as the antennas are at the back. When you are not using the phone, if it is on, stow it in a backpack, purse, or bag. If you keep it on your waist, turn it off. Do not keep a wireless headset turned on in your ear or in your pocket when not in use.<br />
• Whenever possible, only use your phone when the signal quality is good. The weaker the signal, the more the radio frequency has to boost itself to get connected, increasing your exposure. When reception is weak (such as in a rural areas) or when you are in a metal box, such as an elevator, train, or car, use your phone only for emergencies, unless the vehicle has a built-in external antenna to which the phone connects.<br />
• Text more often and when doing so hold the phone away from your body in your hands or on some kind of barrier, a book for example, in your lap. Phones typically use less radiation to send text than to speak, and texting keeps radiation from your head.<br />
<strong>• Put it on speaker.</strong> Your exposure drops more than exponentially as you move the phone away from your head. Note you don’t have to keep the phone very far away to reduce your exposure by a thousand or even ten thousand times. Even when using the speaker, hold the phone away from your torso when you are talking and be sure that the back of the phone is not close to others, especially nursing infants or other children.<br />
• Teach your children to text instead of calling with their phones and tell them not to keep phones on when in their pockets. Tweens and teens and the rest of us should not sleep with cell phones on under pillows or next to the bed all night.<br />
<strong>• Pregnant women</strong> should keep their cell phone away from their abdomen. New mothers should also protect their babies from the phone. Do not speak on the phone or text while holding the device near the abdomen or the baby’s head and do not point the back of the phone where the antennas are located toward a child. A fetus’s or baby’s developing brain is most susceptible to radiation.<br />
</span><span class="s1"><strong>• Men,</strong> especially those trying to become fathers, should also keep their cell phones turned off when in their pockets.<br />
• Be wary of radiation shields and other such protective devices that are claimed to limit exposure to radiation. They may reduce the connection quality and therefore force the phone to transmit at a higher output power.<br />
• Use a landline at home and not a cordless phone, as these emit radio frequency radiation like that of cell phones. (Having a landline means you will have a working phone if and when electricity is cut off during blackouts or if cell towers are not working.)<br />
<strong>• Avoid using a phone or texting while driving.</strong> It’s like driving drunk.<br />
• Read your user guides and the FCC and company manufacturer Web sites. Most of the current user guides provide information about safe distances for phone use in nearly unreadable, small print in the user manuals. <h3><strong>1. Electric equipment</strong></h3>
<p>Increase distance from electrical cords and electric equipment. Move the power bar at least 1 meter away from your feet. Use a wired extended keyboard to increase your distance from the computer screen. This will reduce the magnetic field.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Lighting</strong></h3>
<p>Try to work with the fluorescent tube lighting turned off. Remove CFL (compact fluorescent bulbs) from your work area. LED lights (ones that don’t use transformers) are the lights of the future. In the meantime use incandescent light bulbs, as these do not generate poor power quality. NOTE: the original incandescent light bulbs are no longer available in Canada as the government has mandated that only energy efficient lights can be sold.</p>
<p><span id="more-1941"></span></p>
<h3><strong>3. Internet access</strong></h3>
<p>Use an Ethernet cable for Internet access (not Wi-Fi). If you need to use wireless, ensure the wireless router is as far as possible from your body and turn it off when not in use. Ensure that you turn off the Wi-Fi on your computer (tablet) and not just the router. Use a wired mouse and keyboard.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Cordless phone (DECT phones)</strong></h3>
<p>Replace your cordless telephones with a corded landline phone. The new digital cordless phones in North America (DECT phones) constantly emit microwave radiation, even when not in use. The older analogue phones emit microwave radiation only when being used. The best option for reducing RF exposure is to use a wired phone.</p>
<h3><strong>5. Cell phone (mobile phones)</strong></h3>
<p>Text instead of talk, and use the ‘speakerphone’ option when talking and don’t hold the phone next to your head. Do not keep the phone in a pocket, in your bra, or on a belt. When the signal is weak and/or phone is searching for a carrier, it is transmitting at maximum power and should not be used at this time. When not using your cell phone, keep in airplane mode (with Wi-Fi turned off) so it does not radiate.</p>
<h3><strong>6. Electrical panel &amp; utility room</strong></h3>
<p>Ensure that workers (students) are at least 3 meters from an electric panel and are not adjacent to a utility room as these generate high magnetic fields. Note: Low-frequency magnetic fields (those that we use for electricity) can penetrate walls, windows, doors, ceilings and floors. Consequently, exposure in one room may be coming from an adjacent room. For this reason, it is important to spend as little time as possible near such sources even if they are on the other side of the wall. Radio frequency radiation can also penetrate walls and is blocked or reflected by metal objects generating potential hotspots. If you are in a location where there are radio frequency (RF) sources and metal objects (filing cabinet, fridge, stove, sink, etc.), your RF exposure may be higher or lower depending on the location of the source, the metal and your body. Recommendation: Have a qualified technician measure your workplace for electrosmog. In areas where people spend hours each day, levels should be less than the following values: 1 milliGauss for power frequency magnetic fields; 5 V/m for power frequency electric fields; 40 GS units for dirty electricity; 0.01 microW/cm2 for wireless radiation; 0.5 V for ground current at 60 Hz; and 10 mV for kHz ground current.</p>

<h3><strong>Electromagnetic hygiene in your bedroom</strong></h3>
<p>We spend a third of each day in our bedroom and for that reason, it is important that the bedroom be electromagnetically clean. Reduce electrosmog by following the steps for your office as well as the steps below:</p>
<h3><strong>1. Baby monitor</strong></h3>
<p>Remove wireless baby monitors. Wireless baby monitors constantly transmit microwave radiation. Infants should not be exposed to this radiation. Sound activated baby monitors are not yet available in North America but are available in Europe.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Clock radio</strong></h3>
<p>Move clock radio (and other electric equipment) so it is at least 1 meter from your bed (clock radios emit electromagnetic fields that may affect sleep). Keep the bedroom as dark as possible as light also affects sleep.</p>
<h3><strong>3. Computer, cell phone, Wi-Fi router, tablets</strong></h3>
<p>Unplug the computer at night if it is in your bedroom. Disconnect the Wi-Fi router and turn your cell phone off or keep it in airplane mode with WiFi turned off. This is especially important for children under the age of 18. Several national and international advisories are recommending that children under the age of 18 limit their cell phone use. Use iPods/iPads/smart tablets in airplane mode with WiFi turned off and use a wired computer for Internet access.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Smart meters</strong></h3>
<p>Ask your utility to have your wireless smart meter wired or use analogue smart meters. If this is not possible, use GS filters 1 to reduce the levels of dirty electricity generated by smart meters. Do not sleep in rooms adjacent to the smart meter. Shielding of the meter may be necessary if your smart meter emits radiation frequently. <h3><strong>5. Electric blanket and waterbed</strong></h3>
<p>Avoid use of electric blankets and waterbeds. If you need to use an electric blanket, unplug it after it has warmed the bed. This eliminates the electric and magnetic fields generated by these blankets. If you turn the electric blanket off but leave it plugged in, it will generate an electric field. So to reduce exposure unplugging the blanket is essential.</p>

<p><strong>The Republic of Kazakhstan, <a href="http://www.fengshuilondon.net/dirty-electricity/dirty-electricity">dirty electricity</a> and electrosmog</strong><br />
Some countries take the health of their population much seriously. For example the Republic of Kazakhstan. From the book: &#8220;The International Conference on Electromagnetic Fields and Human Health was held in the Republic of Kazakhstan in September 2003. In November of the same year, the state health department of the Republic of Kazakhstan issued sanitary norms addressing Transient EMF, a move which historically takes decades.&#8221; and &#8220;The Republic of Kazakhstan has acknowledged that there is no safe level of exposure to dirty electricity. A limit of 50 GS units (industrial) was immediately mandated to protect workers. <h3><strong>From my feng shui experience a few more tips for combating electro-smog:</strong></h3>
<h3><strong>• Avoid metal beds and metal spring mattresses</strong></h3>
<p><a href="http://abacaorganic.co.uk/mattresses/latex-mattresses/ramsey-firm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">An organic foam mattress</a> is ideal because it doesn&#8217;t contain any metal which can amplify electro-smog.<br />

<h3><strong>• Sleep in total darkness </strong></h3>
<p>Most light (not red or orange though) and strong electromagnetic pollution (light is electromagnetic) will affect your melatonin production and consequently your sleep. Use <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=eye+masks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">eye masks</a> if necessary.</p>
<h3><strong>• Install a demand switch for your bedroom</strong></h3>
<p>If possible, install <a href="http://www.equilibrauk.com/demand.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a demand switch</a> which will cut off all electricity in your bedroom once you switch off the last lamp (by your bed). There is one downside to the demand switch technology – you won&#8217;t be able to charge your mobile phone, etc.</p>
<h3><strong>• Earth or ground yourself</strong></h3>
<p>Earthing or grounding helps with electro-smog. People with electrosensitive report lesser symptoms when they&#8217;re earthed or grounded.<br />
There are four basic ways to earth yourself to benefit from it:<br />
<strong>1)</strong> earth your bed (requires some knowledge and testing equipment)<br />

<p>Watch the very informative documentary at the end of this blog (<strong>Resonance: Beings of Frequency</strong> by James Russell) about the dangers of electromagnetic radiation and the role of Schumann Resonance in balancing your health and well-being. Research on the effects of mobile phones, mobile masts, DECT cordless home phones, microwave ovens, WiFi broadband, etc &#8211; is shown as a possible cause for all kind of health issues including cancer (research suggests that 3-30% of the population are already electrosensitive). Cancer clusters around the mobile phone masts are discussed, showing that women can develop breast cancer more in those areas.</p>

<p>Earthing, or grounding, involves making direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface to absorb negatively charged electrons, which are plentiful in the Earth&#8217;s surface. Research indicates that electrons from the Earth have antioxidant effects that can protect your body from inflammation and its many well-documented health consequences. For most of our evolutionary history, humans have had continuous contact with the Earth.&#8221; Rubber and plastic-soled shoes work as electrical insulators and, therefore, will block the beneficial and unlimited flow of electrons from the earth to your body and neutralise any static electrical charge flowing through you. In scientific literature, the term <i>Electron Transfer Technology </i>(ETT), is used as another term for &#8216;<i>earthing&#8217; or &#8216;grounding&#8217;</i> – coupling the human body with the earth&#8217;s frequencies. You can think of the Earth as a kind of battery that balances your energies.</p>
<p><strong>The Human Body&#8217;s Connection to the Earth<br />
</strong>The human body relies on a continuous supply of negatively charged electrons to neutralise and prevent the accumulation of positively charged free radicals. Without regular contact with a source of electrons, cells struggle to maintain the necessary balance, leading to an excessive build-up of positive charge. This imbalance can result in the harmful accumulation of free radicals, triggering oxidative stress and inflammation.</p>

</strong>Fortunately, the Earth is continuously charged with electrons, primarily through the countless lightning strikes occurring around the world every hour. This process makes the Earth a rich and abundant source of electrons, regarded as one of nature&#8217;s most potent antioxidants. Every time we make physical contact with the Earth&#8217;s surface, we become grounded, allowing us to absorb these free electrons through our skin. &#8220;Applewhite, an electrical engineer and expert in the design of electrostatic discharge systems in the electronic industry, was both subject and author of the study.4 Measurements were taken while ungrounded and then grounded using a conductive patch and conductive bed pad … Each method (patch and sheet) immediately reduced the common alternating current (AC) 60 Hz ambient voltage induced on the body by a highly significant factor of about 70 on average. The study showed that when the body is grounded, its electrical potential becomes equalized with the Earth&#8217;s electrical potential … This, in turn, prevents the 60 Hz mode from producing an AC electric potential at the surface of the body and from producing perturbations of the electric charges of the molecules inside the body. The study confirms the &#8216;umbrella&#8217; effect of earthing the body explained by Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman in his lectures on electromagnetism. Prolonged exposure to EMFs can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, pain, depression, and even cellular damage.</p>
<p>EMFs are pervasive in our environment, originating from power lines, mobile phones, radio and TV broadcasts, wireless networks, Bluetooth devices, household wiring, and numerous electrical appliances. One way EMFs affect the body is by inducing voltage, which can be measured using a simple multimeter test. It is believed that increased voltage disrupts the body&#8217;s delicate electrical communications, which are essential for many physiological functions.</p>
<p>Grounding the body allows it to immediately equalise with the Earth&#8217;s electrical potential. <p><strong>Grounding During Sleep<br />
</strong>Grounding while sleeping provides the body with several hours of exposure to free electrons, a time when the body undergoes its most significant healing and regeneration processes.</p>
<p>The benefits of earthing are believed to largely stem from the continuous supply of free electrons absorbed from the Earth&#8217;s surface. These negatively charged electrons act as one of the most abundant natural antioxidants available. A recent paper by Oschman (published by The National Centre for Biotechnology Information) explains this phenomenon:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;It is well established, though not widely known, that the surface of the Earth possesses a limitless and continuously renewed supply of free or mobile electrons due to a global atmospheric electron circuit. The most reasonable explanation for the benefits of earthing is that a direct connection with the Earth allows both diurnal electrical rhythms and free electrons to flow from the Earth to the body. Current biomedical research links chronic inflammation to almost every modern chronic illness. <p>Cortisol, a hormone that regulates the body&#8217;s circadian rhythm, is one of the primary regulators of the sleep-wake cycle. A recent study on the effects of grounding during sleep found that participants who slept grounded were almost entirely synchronised with the Earth&#8217;s natural day-night cycle, while those who were disconnected from the Earth showed significant disruption to this rhythm.</p>
<p>Sleeping indoors isolates us from the Earth, disconnecting us from its natural electric current. Furthermore, the higher we are from the ground, the greater the electrical charge carried by the body. For every meter above ground level, approximately 300 volts of charge build up in the body. This means that sleeping in a second-storey bedroom can result in an average charge of 1,000 volts. Such a charge can lead to the accumulation of free radicals, oxidative stress, inflammation, and accelerated ageing. One study even found that individuals living in multi-storey homes had a 40% higher risk of stroke, with elevated body voltage identified as a contributing factor.</p>

<p>We have deprived ourselves of the free electrons in the earth’s natural electric field, the nourishment that is right beneath our feet. <p><strong>The Impact of Grounding on Blood Circulation<br />
</strong>The diagram illustrates the effects of grounding on red blood cells. In this study, grounding demonstrated a natural blood-thinning effect by reducing blood viscosity and helping to separate red blood cells.</p>
<p>Red blood cells naturally carry a negative electric charge on their surface, which helps maintain proper spacing between the cells. A stronger negative charge enhances the cells&#8217; ability to repel one another, resulting in improved blood viscosity.</p>
<p>Grounding naturally increases the negative charge of red blood cells, promoting better repulsion and preventing them from clumping together. This leads to improved circulation, increased blood flow, and enhanced immune function. Blood flow is crucial for overall health, as it transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body. Additionally, blood carries white blood cells and killer T cells, which play key roles in preventing infections and eliminating toxins.</p>
<p>These findings further suggest that the human body is designed to maintain regular contact with the Earth, and that grounding may be essential for optimal health and proper bodily function.</p>
<p><strong>Earthing and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)<br />
</strong>The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is crucial for maintaining the body&#8217;s proper functioning, regulating essential processes such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sweating, and blood pressure reduction.</p>
<p>In one study, the ANS of 28 participants was measured in a double-blind experiment comparing earthing to sham-earthing. While both groups experienced an increase in parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity due to relaxation, the earthing group showed double the increase in PNS function compared to the sham-earthed group after the 40-minute session. Additionally, the PNS activity of the earthing participants continued to rise even after the session ended, a result not observed in the sham-earthing group.</p>
<p><strong><em>Study: Earthing is Safe and Beneficial, Even for Premature Babies</em><br />
</strong>A 2017 study suggested that grounding may enhance the resilience of premature infants in incubators and cribs surrounded by electromagnetic fields (EMFs). The researchers observed a 95% reduction in skin voltage when the infants were grounded. Conducted by Pennsylvania State University, the study involved 26 preterm infants, demonstrating immediate and significant improvements in ANS function, which is critical for managing inflammatory and stress responses. Grounding improved vagal tone by 67%, potentially enhancing the infants&#8217; resilience to stress and reducing the risk of morbidity. <h1><strong>Is grounding / earthing safe?</strong></h1>
<p>For thousands of years, humans have had continuous contact with the Earth – shoes are a fairly new invention. There are no known major contradictions to <strong>natural</strong> grounding when walking barefoot on grass or beach.</p>
<p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000;">WARNING</span>: </strong>So far, I&#8217;ve found only one contradiction to grounding and that is if people are on<strong> thinning blood medication</strong> (such as Coumadin, as it may thin the blood too much) they need to be careful and consult their doctor.</p>
<p>As always, <strong>consult your doctor</strong> if you have any underlying health conditions or using certain medication (blood thinners), use medical devices such as pacemakers, or are pregnant before starting grounding practices, including the use of grounding mats. Improper installation or use of grounding mats – especially in environments with high electromagnetic fields or faulty electrical systems – can increase the risk of electric shock, amplify electromagnetic exposure, or cause other adverse effects. <p><strong>Grounding via electrical earth in your electrical system</strong><br />
If you&#8217;re going to set up the earthing via your electrical cables – check for <a href="http://www.fengshuilondon.net/dirty-electricity/dirty-electricity">dirty electricity</a> and other factors (electrical wiring, metal spring mattresses, metal beds, etc) which can affect the grounding and if you can get the clean earthing effect. Also, in Northern America, electrical earthing is different from the European one and needs to be checked with a m<span id="productTitle" class="a-size-large">ains earth present tester</span>. To be on the safe side, I do recommend checking if the grounding effect is for you with something called body voltage check. Also, be mindful of how you feel when grounded via electrical earth in the electrical system. Grounding directly to the ground outside your home or workplace is ideal, but it still requires checking a specialised earth ground tester as well so you know if it really works. I personally don&#8217;t use any grounding mats – and don&#8217;t recommend a DIY approach to it. I do ground myself every day by having a 20-minute bath (in the morning and evening) and I&#8217;ve checked with the body voltage measurement that I am fully grounded in my bath. Also, people are different and can react differently to artificial grounding via earthing mats/sheets, etc (some couples sleeping in the same bed might have completely opposite reactions to artificial grounding via electrical cables for all kinds of reasons). Ideally,  you need to calibrate it onsite with body voltage measurements then you know for sure if it&#8217;s working and it&#8217;s for you. But if you feel it’s not making you sleep better – listen to your body – and stop using the electrical grounding mode.</p>

</strong>They can have negative effects if<br />
1) they are not installed properly, or<br />
2) if there is a lot of electrosmog in your environment.</p>
<p>While these grounding mats are designed to help with EMFs, there is a risk that they can actually attract and amplify electromagnetic fields, especially in high-EMI areas. In short, using grounding mats can risk channeling harmful currents, amplifying EMI exposure (since grounding mats in unshielded, high-EMF environments – such as near ungrounded appliances – can act as antennas, channeling induced AC or RF currents through your body), and failing during electrical faults, power surges or lightning strikes.</p>

I have two 20-min baths (with Espom salts) every day, one in the morning and one in the evening. <strong>I believe, it’s far more important to reduce electrosmog exposure in your home/workplace in the first place than it is to use grounding mats on regular bases.</strong></div>

<div class="">In short, natural earthing is universally good for most people (and there are other ways of earthing yourself &#8211; ie having a bath, for example, or waking barefoot on the ground, etc), but earthing using grounding mats/sheets needs to be checked and evaluated carefully before using. Be careful – if you have any adverse reactions just stop using the earthing mats.</div>

<p><strong>How and where to practice grounding<br />
</strong>When it comes to grounding, connecting any part of your skin to the Earth offers benefits. However, there is a specific area that holds great potential: the centre of the ball of your foot, known as Kidney 1 (K1) in acupuncture. Kidney 1 is an acupuncture point that has a conductive connection to all the acupuncture meridians in your body. Exercising barefoot outdoors is an excellent way to incorporate grounding into your daily routine. It not only allows you to connect with the Earth but also accelerates tissue repair and alleviates muscle pain associated with intense physical activity.</p>
<p>The ideal locations for <strong>walking barefoot</strong> are beaches near or in the water. Saltwater is an excellent conductor, and it enhances the grounding effect. Additionally, our bodies possess some conductivity due to the presence of charged ions (electrolytes) dissolved in water. Consequently, our blood and other body fluids act as good conductors.</p>
<p>A close second option is a <strong>grassy area</strong>, especially if it is covered with <strong>dew</strong> or <strong>bare soil</strong>. <span style="color: #ff0000;"><strong>Ceramic tiles </strong><span style="color: #000000;">(I do recommend these for homes and workplaces)</span></span><span style="color: #000000;"> </span>and <strong>unsealed concrete</strong> are also good conductors, allowing electrons to pass through. However, painted concrete restricts the flow of electrons. Materials like asphalt, wood, rubber, and plastic are insulators that prevent the transfer of electrons and are unsuitable for barefoot grounding.</p>
<p>While any amount of grounding is beneficial, research indicates that it takes approximately<strong> 80 minutes</strong> for the Earth&#8217;s free electrons to reach your bloodstream and bring about the most significant advantages. Therefore, it is ideal to aim for <strong>80 to 120 minutes of grounding each day</strong> to reap the benefits of this practice fully. But any time, even a short grounding session, will have some benefit.</p>
<h3><strong>There are five basic ways to earth yourself to benefit from it<br />
</strong><span id="ctl00_tr_rptStory_ctl03_cslStory"></span></h3>
<p><span id="ctl00_tr_rptStory_ctl03_cslStory">Surfaces that allow for good grounding include sand, grass, bare dirt, untreated concrete, brick and ceramic tiles. The best results you get when the earth or surface is wet for the best conductivity. Leather-soled shoes also allow you to ground while walking, whereas rubber-soled shoes disconnect you from the earth and block beneficial electron transfer. Dr Laura Koniver, a physician and author of the recently released <a class="body-link" href="http://buy.geni.us/Proxy.ashx?tsid=3927&amp;GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2FEarth-Prescription-Discover-Grounding-Practices%2Fdp%2F1684034892%3Fascsubtag%3DES%7C4532621%7C1684034892" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-vars-item-name="BL-4532621-https://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Prescription-Discover-Grounding-Practices/dp/1684034892" data-vars-event-id="c23"><em>The</em></a><em><a class="body-link" href="http://buy.geni.us/Proxy.ashx?tsid=3927&amp;GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2FEarth-Prescription-Discover-Grounding-Practices%2Fdp%2F1684034892%3Fascsubtag%3DES%7C4532621%7C1684034892" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" data-vars-item-name="BL-4532621-https://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Prescription-Discover-Grounding-Practices/dp/1684034892" data-vars-event-id="c23"> Earth Prescription</a> </em>(2020), recommends grounding for around 30 minutes a day but other researchers (Chevalier, et al 2012) suggest about 80 minutes to get the full effect.</span></p>
<p><strong>1)</strong> <strong>Walk barefoot </strong>whenever you can (not very practical), but even touching a tree for a few minutes can make a difference. (If you can do your exercises outdoor on the grass &#8211; grounding helps too. I&#8217;ve had my Pilates personal training done in a park, and I felt a significant difference). Unfortunately, modern rubber shoe soles insulate us from the health benefit of earthing. Leather shoe soles are much better at conducting earth&#8217;s frequencies.</p>
<p>Touching metal water sockets or metal radiators will have a grounding effect since they&#8217;re usually grounded. Also, washing dishes will have a grounding effect because you&#8217;ll be in contact with water and sink, which is most likely grounded. I like washing dishes – it&#8217;s my meditation/mindfulness practice.</p>
<p>If you have a garden, you could make a labyrinth to walk around. Labyrinths can have healing, meditative properties, so combining walking barefoot in a labyrinth is a double whammy.</p>
<p>Another option, which I do under the right conditions is to walk barefoot on snow – only for a minute or so. Over the years, I&#8217;ve built up my tolerance to it, but I only do it on fluffy snow and when it&#8217;s not too cold and for a very short time.</p>
<p><strong>2)</strong> <strong>Earth your bed or your desk</strong> (requires some knowledge and testing equipment – a body voltage meter can determine how much electricity is induced when lying in bed or sitting in a chair and how much the electric charge is reduced by grounding. Also, checking the ground/earth wire in the electrical socket is essential for it to work well. Checking <a href="http://www.fengshuilondon.net/dirty-electricity/dirty-electricity">dirty electricity</a> is important, too, since it can affect the grounding process. <strong>Read above if grounding/earthing is safe.</strong></p>
<p><strong>3)</strong> <strong>Have regular, 10-20min baths</strong> in the evening (my favourite). People who are electrosensitive discovered that they had fewer symptoms when they were having baths because they were naturally earthed. Please note that if your bath is plastic and the pipes are plastic, the grounding effect might be non-existent. Add some <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Westlab-Epsom-Resealable-Stand-Pouch/dp/B003V9M2ZS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1407226785&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=epsom+salts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Epsom salts </a>or <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Better-You-Magnesium-Original-Flakes/dp/B00477782K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1407226758&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=magnesium+bath+salts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">magnesium</a> (magnesium is depleted from our bodies when we get stressed) to your bath. Also, touching a radiator or a metal water tap will most likely have a grounding effect since most radiators and water taps are earthed.</p>

<p><strong>5) Ceramic tiles.</strong> If you&#8217;re building or redecorating your home or workplace – consider ceramic tiles, which, when grounded properly will provide a natural grounding surface so you can enjoy earthing at your home or workplace. I highly recommend it. I&#8217;ve tested many houses which have tiles and the earthing effect was sometimes stronger than in their gardens.</p>

<p><strong>Indoor grounding techniques<br />
</strong>In the past, walking barefoot and sleeping on the ground were common practices. However, modern living has distanced us from direct contact with the Earth. This disconnection can lead to an accumulation of electric charge in our bodies, which can have negative consequences. The farther we are from the ground, the higher our charge. This has been accurately calculated: for every meter (3.28 feet) above the ground, our bodies accumulate 300 volts of charge. If we find ourselves in an elevated indoor environment, such as a second-story bedroom, the average charge can reach 1,000 volts, potentially increasing the risk of health problems. <a href="https://bmcgeriatr.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2318-9-17" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research from 2009</a> even discovered a 40% higher risk of stroke among individuals residing in multistory homes.</p>
<p>Fortunately, there are ways to ground ourselves while indoors or at higher elevations:<br />
<strong>1. Grounding pad or sheet:</strong> Use a grounding pad or sheet to connect your mattress to the ground while you sleep. This method ensures a direct connection between your body and the Earth.<br />
<strong>2. Grounding mat:</strong> Keep your bare feet on a grounding mat while working. Grounding mats are effective if you have access to a grounded electrical outlet, especially beneficial in high-rise buildings. A grounded outlet can be identified by its three-prong design, including a ground port at the bottom. Make sure your skin directly contacts the mat without any clothing barrier.<br />
<strong>3. Grounded yoga mat:</strong> Practice indoor yoga on a grounded yoga mat. <a href="https://www.scirp.org/Journal/PaperInformation.aspx?PaperID=55445#.VSqbt_nF_IM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Research indicates that performing yoga on a grounded mat indoors</a> can help reduce blood viscosity and exercise-induced inflammation, providing similar benefits to walking barefoot outside.<br />
<strong>4. Faucet contact:</strong> While shaving or brushing your teeth, touch the faucet with one hand while using the other. This contact with a conductive element can help discharge accumulated charge.<br />
<strong>5. Airplane grounding:</strong> When flying, remove your shoes and rest your feet (bare or with socks) on the steel struts of the chair in front of you. This physical connection with the metal structure can help ground you during the flight.<br />
<strong>6. Ceramic tiles:</strong> if you have any ceramic tiles anywhere in your home/workplace, you&#8217;re most likely to be grounded automatically there when walking barefoot (but do check with the body voltage kit, just to be sure). Also, some types of other flooring material can have a grounding effect (obviously, this needs to be checked with the body voltage kit again), but wood and carpets most likely won&#8217;t ground you.</p>
<p>By implementing these grounding techniques, you can maintain a balanced electrical state even while indoors or at higher elevations, promoting well-being and potentially reducing health risks.</p>

He was also aware of dumbing down our senses when wearing shoes. The soles of our feet have more than 200,000 receptors. This sensory information is used by our bodies to soften or stiffen our joints and alter our posture as a pro­tection mechanism against injury and to maximise the efficiency of our ­movement.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #ff0000;">SUMMARY</span></h3>
<p>Grounding/earthing has an antioxidant effect that helps alleviate inflammation in your body. When your body is grounded, you absorb large amounts of negative electrons in your body. Unhealthy lifestyle choices (sugar, smoking, electromagnetic smog, stress, high cholesterol, high uric acid levels) can make your blood hypercoagulable, i.e. thick and slow-moving, which increases the risk of having a blood clot or stroke. Earthing helps thin blood by improving its zeta potential – blood cells get a more negative charge, which in turn helps them repel each other to keep blood thin and less likely to clot. This process can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. Research suggests (Chevalier, et al 2012) that it takes about 80 minutes, or 40 minutes over two grounding periods, for the free electrons from the earth to reach your bloodstream and transform blood. So if you can ground yourself for about 1.5 to two hours to get the full effect. Walking barefoot is one way, but there are other ways too (see above), such as having a (long) bath, tiled flooring, etc.</p>
<h3><strong>Research on earthing/grounding</strong></h3>
<p>There are at least <strong>41 published studies</strong> specifically investigating the effects of grounding (earthing) on human physiology, health, and related outcomes<span class="whitespace-nowrap">.</span> This number is based on a comprehensive list compiled by the <a href="https://earthinginstitute.net/research/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Earthing Institute</a>, which tracks both clinical and experimental research in this field.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">Grounding health benefits have been known for more than 100 years (of course, early humans didn&#8217;t have shoes, so that was a default way of walking), firstly popularised by German back-to-nature movements in the 19th century. In the 20s, in America, doctors recommended sleeping while &#8216;grounded&#8217;, because they believed that charges in the air were stopping people from sleeping well. So they suggested that patients with insomnia should lie on the ground or use copper wires attached to grounded pipes to &#8216;connect&#8217; to the earth&#8217;s negatively charged particles.</p>
<p class="mol-para-with-font">The NHS and mental health charity Mind recommends grounding techniques, such as walks, to help people deal with flashbacks, nightmares or PTSD — with barefoot being optional.  &#8220;Walking outside (barefoot, if you want to) is one of a range of strategies we recommend to ground yourself.&#8221; said mental health nurse Jo Hemming. &#8220;Studies show grounding supports a reduction in anxiety and increases well-being and resilience. Practise and repetition is key, though, because it&#8217;s not an overnight cure.&#8221;</p>
<p>There is scientific support for grounding (41 studies), such as this 2011 study published in the Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine (<a id="lnkReference" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3154031/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alternative Complementary Medicine 2011 Apr; 17(4): 301–308.</a>), which states:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em>Earthing of an electrically insulated human organism during night rest causes lowering of serum concentrations of iron, ionized calcium, inorganic phosphorus, and reduction of renal excretion of calcium and phosphorus.</em></p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p><em>Earthing during night rest decreases free tri-iodothyronine and increases free thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone. The continuous earthing of the human body decreases blood glucose in patients with diabetes.</em></p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p><em>Earthing decreases sodium, potassium, magnesium, iron, total protein, and albumin concentrations while the levels of transferrin, ferritin, and globulins α1, α2, β, and γ increase. These results are statistically significant …</em></p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p><em>Earthing the human body during relaxation and during physical activity is responsible for the increasing glucose utilization by the cells in NIDDM. Lack of contact with the Earth may cause opposite effects and may be the reason for several disorders (diabetes, obesity, and hypertension).</em></p></blockquote>

<p><b>ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION AND HEALTH: </b><b>EVIDENCE, DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT </b></p>

<p><b>Professor Denis L Henshaw<br />
</b>Following a research career spanning 38 years, Denis Henshaw is Emeritus Professor of Human Radiation Effects at the University of Bristol. In retirement he is Honorary Scientific Director at Children with Cancer UK. Denis’s early research was in Astrophysics, but he branched out to pioneer new techniques for measuring natural alpha-radioactivity in the environment. Over a 24-year period, under Medical Research Council Programme Grant support, he led a team studying natural alpha-radioactive particles in the human body, including their transplacental transfer to the foetus. He predicted a link between the natural radioactive gas radon and leukaemia, publishing in The Lancet in 1990 a series of associations between domestic radon exposure and incidence of childhood leukaemia. This led to work by others revealing genomic instability of cells irradiated with alpha-particles. In the mid-1990s he and his team made extensive measurements of alpha-radioactivity in the Chernobyl exclusion zone resulting from the accident at Reactor IV on 26th April 1986.<br />
In the mid-1990s, Denis and his colleagues developed the hypothesis that corona ions emitted from high-voltage overhead powerlines, could mediate adverse health effects, beyond the range of the direct electric and magnetic fields. The hypothesis predates four subsequent epidemiological findings, three in children and one in adults, of increased risk of leukaemia up to 600 metres from powerlines. Complementing this research, Denis has been a leader in the study of underlying mechanisms by which exposure to magnetic fields from the electricity supply may increase the risk of a number of cancer and non-cancer illnesses, notably via melatonin disruption.<br />
Denis has published over 250 scientific papers. He has contributed to Parliamentary select committee and other reports by Official bodies in the UK and overseas, and the World Health Organisation, including membership of the UK Stakeholder Advisory Group for EMF (SAGE).</p>
<p><b>Professor Martin L Pall<br />
</b>Martin Pall is Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University. He received his BA degree at Johns Hopkins Univ. and PhD at Caltech. Professor Pall is the author of 90 publications including a 16 chapter book (‘Explaining Unexplained Illnesses’). He received the Jonathan Forman award in Oct. 2013, the highest honour given by the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), this being the seventh international honour Pall has received for his work in environmental medicine since 2004. He is a founding faculty member in the Environmental Medicine program in Italy. Prof. Pall is widely known for his work on the NO/ONOO- cycle, a generic mechanism for chronic disease, and is also widely known for his work on how various stressors, including diverse chemicals, initiate cases of such chronic diseases. Pall has published 15 scientific papers since he “retired” from the University five years ago and has given approximately 50 invited talks in nine countries during that time period. Pall’s recent (Aug. 2013) paper on EMF activation of voltage-gated calcium channels is already widely recognized as a seminal paper in the field, and he has already given three professional talks on this topic and submitted two additional papers as well.</p>
<p><b>Dr Erica Mallery-Blythe<br />
</b>Dr. Mallery-Blythe led emergency trauma teams in hospitals throughout the UK and abroad for over a decade. She had a strong educational role also within Emergency Medicine, and not only instructed doctors of all levels and specialties advanced trauma techniques on ATLS courses, but also educated potential new instructors by teaching on the instructor courses. Around 5 years ago, she was lured away from the trauma room by her observation of emerging radiation induced illness. She began reading existing literature on the subject, specifically regarding biological effects of non-thermal levels of non-ionising radiation. She has now worked with eminent scientists both in the UK and abroad on the subject, and currently fills the following positions: 1. Trustee for the Radiation Research Trust 2. Medical Advisor for Electrosensitivity – UK (ES-UK) 3. Board Member of Child Protection Technology Foundation (CPTF) – US-based group 4. Director of Health for Óver-Achievers In the course of her work for these organisations she constructs and executes research projects, supports individuals with electrohypersensitivity (EHS) and their families, liaises with doctors of all specialties to facilitate optimal care and deal with challenging cases, and improves education and awareness with both medical and public lectures both regarding EHS and effects on the general population. She is currently establishing a UK doctors group for medical professionals who wish to stay current on the issue, offer improved patient care in this rapidly evolving area, and facilitate a more progressive approach here in the UK. <p><b>Alasdair Philips DAgrE, BSc(Eng), MIAgrE, MIEEE<br />
</b>Alasdair is a professional engineer (agricultural and electronics), scientific researcher and project manager. He was a Founder Member of the UK Department of Health’s ELF EMF (SAGE) consultation process, a former member of Sir William Stewart’s HPA EMF Discussion Group and a former member of an EC (Brussels) Expert Group on public advice regarding EMF and Health. He has given professional advice to local authorities and presented Expert Evidence to the High Court &amp; Public Inquiries. In 1998, Coghill, Busby and Philips took a case to court on the need for Warning Labels on mobile phones, resulting in the setting up of the Independent Expert Group on Mobile Phones. He also instigated and co-ordinated the CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA International Scientific Conference on the causes and prevention of childhood leukaemia and was closely involved in organising the Childhood Cancer 2012 conference, London. <a href="http://www.childhoodcancer2012.org.uk" target="_blank">www.childhoodcancer2012.org.uk</a><br />
Alasdair has made many appearances on UK radio (R4, R5, and BBC World Service) and TV (BBC1, ITV, CH4, CH5, CNN and Sky News) and is a Member of Scientists for Global Responsibility (On Steering Committee 1992-96). He is the author of ‘Living with Electricity’ and ‘Killing Fields in the Home?’ and co-author of the Powerwatch Handbook (Piatkus Books, 2006). He is also a co-author on the paper Coghill RW, Steward J, Philips A. ‘Extra low frequency electric and magnetic fields in the bedplace of children diagnosed with leukaemia: a case-control study’. Eur J Cancer Prev. 1996 Jun;5(3):153-8. Alasdair has also founded, and is currently a director of, Powerwatch (<a href="http://www.powerwatch.org.uk" target="_blank">www.powerwatch.org.uk</a>), an organisation which promotes policies for a safer environment with respect to radiation.</p>
<p><b>Dr John McLaren Howard<br />
</b>Dr McLaren Howard developed his education and skills while working in the Analytical Research laboratories of Laporte Chemicals and as a Scientific Officer at a UK Government Research Association at Welwyn in Hertfordshire, where he developed new analytical methods. His first papers were on high voltage electrophoresis for the measurement of trace elements and on the formation of calcium sulphato-aluminate crystals. In 1965 John took up the post of Clinical Biochemist at the London Clinic. During 19 years in that hospital he introduced a trace element assessment service and undertook ongoing cooperative work with colleagues in the USA, including work with Dr F W Sunderman Jr on serum nickel as a marker of myocardial infarction. John’s lectures and examination success led to the award of a Doctor of Science degree in 1979. John continued his part time studies at Birkbeck College, University of London under the direction of Prof Peter Sadler, taking the Inorganic Biochemistry in Medicine course.<br />
In 1984, John and Dr Stephen Davies set up Biolab Medical Unit where John became Laboratory Director, a post he held until his retirement in May 2007. During those years John published over 20 papers, contributed to at least seven books and broadcast on a number of subjects related to nutrition in medicine. Following a series of lectures to the college, John became an invited Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is also a founder member of and continues to be active in the Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Following his retirement from Biolab, John continued his detailed work on ATP and mitochondrial function through his own laboratory (Acumen), based a few miles from his home in Devon, UK. He continues to explore and develop techniques using recent developments in fluorescent microscopy to allow one to ‘see’ clinically important biochemical reactions at the molecular level.</p>
<p><b>Michael Bevington MA (Oxon.), MEd (O.U.)<br />
</b>Michael Bevington took a degree in Classics at Exeter College, Oxford University, where he was awarded an Open Exhibition. He then passed a PGCE with distinction at King’s College, London, and has since taken an MEd at the Open University. Since 1986 he has been Head of Classics at Stowe School, Buckingham. He is also a team leader for a national examination board, a tutor for Buckingham University, and has published several books and articles, especially on 18th century architecture and garden iconography.<br />
His interest in the biological effects of low-level electromagnetic exposure began in September 2006, when he was sensitised to EM radiation after a WiFi router was installed in his classroom. His case showing harm from WiFi was one of the first to feature in the national press, appearing in the Times and Times Educational Supplement in November and December 2006. This was followed by radio and TV appearances, especially after the BBC Panorama programme on the dangers of WiFi in April 2007. In 2007 he became a trustee of the charity ElectroSensitivity UK (ES-UK) and since 2008 has been its chair. In 2010 he published the first edition of <i>Electromagnetic Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Hyper-Sensitivity: A Summary</i>, revised and enlarged in 2013 to 112 pages with over 1800 scientific references, to help provide key information on the condition for doctors and health officials. He is contributing in a small way to a forthcoming book on Bioelectromagnetic Medicine. He has also edited the quarterly ES-UK Newsletter since 2007.</p>
<p><b>Dr Jean Monro<br />
</b>Dr Jean Monro has a background in hospital general medicine and worked at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London, researching migraine and multiple sclerosis. She established the Breakspear Hospital for Allergy and Environmental Medicine in 1988 and is currently Medical Director of the Breakspear Medical Group. She was a Consultant at Fachkrankenhaus Nordfriesland, Germany, from 1991 to 2009. She has published widely and regularly speaks at conferences worldwide.<br />
Dr Monro’s primary area of interest is environmental medicine. She started her career as a hospital doctor with an interest in paediatrics and neurology, and moved on to general medicine, subsequently developing a special interest in allergies and environmental medicine.</p>
<p><b>Dr John Kelsey PhD, ND<br />
</b>John is half smart and keen to use his scientific background that seeks solid substantiation. 25 years of designing toxic waste water plants that had to work reinforced the premise that results are the real basis for success. Scientific explanations are useful, revealing, often demanded, but not always a necessity. Acupuncture is a primary example, where results are visible and scientifically unexplained. At age 50 John changed direction and retrained progressively in Chi Kung healing, meditation practices, basic nutrition, person centred counselling and traditional naturopathy. This provided a balance to the scientific perspective. Having a technological bent, John became involved in biofeedback devices, including user manual, training and certification systems. Devices have formed the basis for ongoing research, in conjunction with a cutting edge clinic in Norway. The EIS/EsTeck offers a rapid and reproducible functional assessment, assessing therapeutic interventions and disturbances. It is the initial assessment approach used for assessing the effect of EMFs and shows a demonstrable effect within 10 minutes. Other approaches (GSR, simple EEG, HRV, BIA, thermography and biofield) are being assessed for which EMF aspects are primary in creating an issue and elaborating mechanisms. Of particular interest is the links between biofield, meridians and organs, especially in the purported benefit of phone protective devices. We would like to indulge a program that can demonstrate EMF effects that can be used in schools, such as plants and the ant tests in Sweden, with the view that this will initiate a viral spread of problem awareness.<br />
Our research indulgence is limited by the need to earn a living! John brought (indoor) Earthing® into Europe, at the strong insistence of Dr James Oschman. This shows significant effects on many peoples’ sleep, pain and inflammation. It is supported by good studies. John is the MD of SaferWave, set up to market a product designed to reduce the effects of phone signals on health by addressing the cause at its roots. John will be presenting the science behind both earthing and phone protection.</p>
<p><b>Rachel Nicoll<br />
</b>Rachel came to medicine late in life as a result of her own health problems. She is currently studying for a PhD and works as a researcher on, mainly, cardiovascular disease but also has a strong interest in environmental and nutritional medicine. She has written over 20 papers and lectured on aspects of nutritional and environmental medicine and biochemistry.</p>
