I’m giving a lecture called Feng Shui Patterns: Recognition, Utilisation, Creation and Freedom Beyond Feng Shui on Saturday, 16 May 2026, 5pm UK time, at IFSG Feng Shui Summit.

You can register for this Feng Shui Summit here. The live sessions are FREE.

Fengshui is the study of environmental patterns shaping your life through space and time. Advance beyond traditional feng shui models into advanced fengshui pattern recognition, utilisation and creation – learn to read the hidden patterns of your home and workplace, understand energetic flows, feedback loops and leverage points, work intelligently with complexity, and design environments that resolve challenges at their roots and genuinely support long-term freedom, stability, growth and success.

Fengshui (wind-water) is, at its core, the study of environmental patterns. It explores how qi, or life energy, moves through space and time, shaping landscapes, buildings, organisations and human experience. Fengshui therefore works with two inseparable dimensions: spatial patterns, how energy arranges itself in environments, and temporal patterns, how energy changes, cycles and evolves.

At the foundation of fengshui lie several key pattern languages. Yin and yang describe divergence and convergence. The five elements express cyclical transformation through seasonal processes. The bagua maps energetic relationships within space. Fengshui astrology extends this into time, exploring how energetic patterns unfold across life phases. Together, these models provide a vocabulary for observing how environments function, where harmony emerges, and where imbalance develops.

This talk goes beyond using these models descriptively and focuses on advanced pattern work. You will be introduced to three interrelated capacities: pattern recognition, pattern utilisation and pattern creation.

Pattern recognition is the ability to perceive recurring structures across environments, behaviours, organisations and systems. It means seeing underlying configurations rather than isolated events. In fengshui this begins with observing flows, relationships and feedback loops within spaces. In this talk, the skill is sharpened through systems thinking, revealing how environments operate as dynamic networks rather than static layouts.

Pattern utilisation is the skill of working intelligently with existing structures. It involves identifying leverage points, amplifying supportive dynamics and reducing destabilising ones. Drawing on cybernetics, this section explores how environments self-regulate, how feedback loops stabilise or destabilise systems, and how small interventions can generate disproportionate effects. Fengshui becomes not decorative placement, but strategic environmental tuning.

Pattern creation is the most advanced dimension. It moves from responding to patterns toward deliberately designing new ones. At this level, fengshui becomes a generative practice. Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols, helps us understand how environments communicate and how we actively create meaning through colour, form, material, layout and cultural cues. This dimension also integrates insights from artificial intelligence, where pattern learning and generation are central. Here, AI is approached as a creative assistant for exploring possibilities, generating variations and visualisations, which are then evaluated through fengshui principles, lived experience and symbolic coherence.

As Winston Churchill famously observed, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” This captures the central theme of the talk: environments are not neutral. They condition perception, behaviour and possibility. This insight also underpins Christopher Alexander’s A Pattern Language, which demonstrates how recurring design structures influence human life. Fengshui stands within this lineage, offering an environmental grammar through which patterns can be read, modified and invented.

Rather than being confined by techniques or formulas, you will learn to think in patterns, work with complexity, and consciously design environments that support intelligent, adaptive and flourishing systems. By engaging fengshui through advanced pattern recognition, utilisation and creation, fengshui becomes a practical problem-solving language, giving you greater clarity, flexibility and confidence to work with any situation, transform challenges at their roots, and design homes and workplaces that genuinely support long-term freedom, stability, success and growth in your life.

Jan Cisek, MSc, is a world-leading, leading-edge fengshui consultant, environmental psychologist, PhD researcher with over 40 years of experience. A co-founder of the Feng Shui Society of Great Britain in 1993, he has been instrumental in popularising fengshui internationally. His work integrates classical fengshui, semiotics, systems thinking, cybernetics and AI-informed pattern design, extending fengshui into a transpersonal, creative, innovative, yet deeply practical environmental discipline.

What is auspiciousness?

In general terms, “auspicious” refers to something that is favourable, promising, or conducive to success. In cultural and spiritual contexts, it often relates to events, dates, or symbols that are believed to bring good fortune, positive outcomes, and blessings. In short, auspiciousness is good fortune or fortunate blessings.

In feng shui, an auspicious arrangement might involve positioning furniture, decorations, or buildings in ways that attract positive energy (qi) and create harmonious environments. Auspicious dates and times are also selected for important events such as weddings, business openings, and other significant undertakings to ensure success and good luck.

For example, in feng shui, placing a water feature in an auspicious location in your home or office can be considered auspicious as it is believed to attract wealth and prosperity. Similarly, in many cultures, certain numbers, colours, charms or symbols are seen as auspicious and are used to promote well-being and success.

Auspicious feng shui locations are strategically chosen spaces that align with the natural flow of energy, or qi, to promote harmony, prosperity, and well-being. These locations are carefully selected based on various principles, including the orientation of the building, the surrounding landscape, and the internal layout. For instance, an auspicious home might be positioned with a clear view of a flowing river, symbolising the continuous flow of wealth and good fortune. Inside the home, key areas like the entrance, bedroom, and kitchen are arranged to optimise energy flow, ensuring that positive energy circulates freely while stagnant energy is minimised. By aligning one’s living or working environment with these auspicious locations, individuals can enhance their overall quality of life, attract favourable opportunities, and create a balanced, thriving atmosphere.

In the bagua model, the fortunate blessings (wealth) area of your home is an excellent auspicious space to position feng shui rituals.

Differences and similarities between “auspicious” and “luck”

The terms “auspicious” and “luck” both relate to favourable outcomes and positive experiences, but they differ in their nuances and contexts.

“Auspicious” typically refers to conditions, signs, or events that are seen as promising and conducive to success or good outcomes. It often implies a deliberate alignment with certain favourable elements or practices. For example, choosing an auspicious date for a wedding means selecting a date that is believed to bring good fortune and positive energy based on cultural, astrological, or feng shui principles.

“Luck,” on the other hand, is more about chance and the random occurrence of positive or negative events. Luck is often considered unpredictable and not influenced by specific actions or planning. It can be good or bad and is frequently viewed as a matter of fate or fortune beyond one’s control.

In summary, while both auspiciousness and luck involve favourable outcomes, auspiciousness is about creating or recognising conditions that are believed to lead to success, often through intentional actions or signs. Luck, however, is more about random chance and the unexpected nature of events.

Richard Wiseman, in his book “The Luck Factor,” explains how people can enhance their luck through deliberate actions and attitudes. He defines luck as the ability to be in the right place at the right time, doing the right things, which involves specific beliefs and ideas. These concepts can be related to thriftiness in several ways.

Firstly, thriftiness often requires planning and anticipating future needs and opportunities. Being thrifty means making conscious decisions that can yield benefits in the future, similar to intentionally creating conditions conducive to luck.

Secondly, both thriftiness and the luck described by Wiseman involve an active approach to life. Thrifty individuals plan their spending and investments to maximise benefits and avoid unnecessary losses. Similarly, lucky people, according to Wiseman, take steps to put themselves in situations that increase their chances of positive outcomes.

Lastly, thriftiness can help create more stable living conditions, which can increase a sense of control and life satisfaction. This can lead to a more positive attitude, which Wiseman identifies as a key element of luck.

In summary, thriftiness and the concept of luck described by Wiseman are linked by the idea of consciously shaping one’s life through planning, activity, and a positive outlook.

The Science of Luck: Aligning Yourself with Auspicious Circumstances

Richard Wiseman, in his book “The Luck Factor,” based on his scientific research, describes how people can enhance their luck through specific behaviours and attitudes. This concept of creating one’s own luck can be connected to the idea of auspiciousness, which often involves intentionally aligning actions and conditions to foster positive outcomes.

Firstly, Wiseman emphasises the importance of being open to opportunities and noticing good chances when they arise. This aligns with the concept of auspiciousness, where certain times, places, or actions are considered particularly favourable for achieving success. By being aware of and acting on these auspicious signs or moments, individuals can increase their chances of experiencing good luck.

Luck is: being in the right place, at the right time, doing the right things. But how? By being in the right state of mind – the luck factor mindset (which is in our control).

Secondly, Wiseman discusses the role of intuition and making good decisions. In many cultural and spiritual traditions, acting in alignment with auspicious times or conditions is believed to enhance the likelihood of positive results. This is similar to how Wiseman suggests that intuitive decisions can lead to favourable outcomes, indicating that an awareness of auspicious conditions can guide better decision-making.

Lastly, both concepts involve a positive mindset and proactive behaviour. Wiseman highlights that a positive outlook and resilience can attract good luck. Similarly, those who seek to act in auspicious ways often do so with confidence and optimism, believing that their actions will bring about good fortune. This positive approach can create a self-fulfilling prophecy where favourable conditions and good luck reinforce each other.

In summary, connecting Wiseman’s ideas about luck with the concept of auspiciousness involves recognising and acting on favourable opportunities, making intuitive and informed decisions, and maintaining a positive and proactive mindset. Both approaches focus on creating conditions that enhance the likelihood of success and positive outcomes.
Auspicious Charms: How Lucky Charms Work Like a Charm

Lucky charms have existed across cultures throughout history, and they continue to be popular today. A few years ago, Richard Wiseman (The Luck Factor) conducted an experiment to scientifically test the effects of carrying a lucky charm. One hundred people were asked to carry a lucky Victorian penny for just over a month and to use it as a reminder to ‘think lucky.’ The results were remarkable, revealing significant psychological benefits from the charms. The penny provided individuals with an increased sense of security and a more positive outlook on the future. The charms encouraged participants to adopt a lucky mindset, with over 30 per cent reporting an improvement in their luck. Interestingly, at the end of the study, 70 per cent of participants stated they would continue to carry the charm.

Tip: Carry a Charm
It could be a lucky coin, a gemstone, or even just a pebble. Choose a lucky coin, a gemstone, or even a simple pebble – something that has meaning to you, contextualised for auspiciousness and luck. Add it to your keychain, keep it in your pocket, or place it somewhere visible in your daily routine. If you don’t carry anything but your mobile phone, make sure your screen wallpaper features a lucky charm image to keep the positive vibes with you always. Let it serve as a constant reminder to stay open, happy, opportunistic, optimistic, and embrace the luck that comes your way.

Richard Wiseman suggest this image as a reminder to attract more luck.

Mindfulness and Auspicious Living: Cultivating Awareness to Capture Good Fortune

Based on the search results, there is evidence to suggest that wearing/keeping a lucky charm can potentially improve mental well-being in several ways:

Increased confidence and self-assurance: Studies have shown that people who carry a lucky charm tend to perform better in tasks and feel more confident. This boost in confidence can have a positive impact on overall mental well-being.

Reduced stress and anxiety: Having a talisman or good luck charm may help alleviate stress and anxiety by providing a sense of protection or support.

Improved performance: Research has demonstrated that people perform better when they believe they have a lucky charm with them. For example, a study found that students who were told they had a “lucky” golf ball performed better than those who weren’t.

Enhanced optimism: Carrying a lucky charm can promote a more optimistic outlook, which is associated with better mental health outcome.

Increased willingness to take calculated risks: Lucky charms may have a “fear-blocking” effect, allowing individuals to be more likely to take calculated risks and strive for higher goals.

Heightened self-awareness: Some charms, like mood rings, can help individuals become more aware of their emotions, which can be beneficial for those struggling with mental health issues.

Placebo effect: The belief in the power of a lucky charm can create a positive psychological effect, even if there’s no inherent magical property in the object itself. Read about placebo effect

It’s important to note that the benefits of lucky charms are primarily psychological and stem from the individual’s belief in their power rather than any inherent magical properties. The positive effects are likely due to increased self-efficacy, optimism, and a more proactive approach to opportunities. While lucky charms can provide a mental boost, they should not be seen as a substitute for professional mental health care when needed. Instead, they can be viewed as a complementary tool for enhancing overall well-being and promoting a positive mindset.

This session will take you on a journey of interpreting your home through the lens of metaphor and symbolism in feng shui. This exploration will not only enhance your understanding of feng shui but also deepen your insight into how your living environment can be adjusted to foster desired outcomes.

Robert Stetson Shaw once remarked, “You don’t perceive something until the right metaphor allows you to see it.” This observation is profoundly relevant to the practice of feng shui, where the arrangement and symbolism within our living spaces play a crucial role.

Metaphors serve as powerful instruments, possessing the capability to facilitate healing and transformation. Albert Einstein highlighted the significance of symbolic language, stating, “Symbols hold the power to influence us not just intellectually, but also on behavioural and emotional levels.”

In this presentation, we will explore the art of feng shui and refining your spatial arrangements and leveraging metaphors and symbols, using examples from an environment we all know well – our homes.

As Eleanor Sandry has noted, “We anthropomorphise everything.” It is a human tendency to attribute intent, emotions, and identities to various entities, ranging from dolphins and houses to everyday objects like Microsoft’s paperclips or LEGO blocks. We assign deep meanings to the objects that surround us.

This session will take you on a journey of interpreting your home through the lens of metaphor and symbolism in feng shui. This exploration will not only enhance your understanding of feng shui but also deepen your insight into how your living environment can be adjusted to foster desired outcomes.

This engaging presentation promises to be both enjoyable and enlightening, transforming the way you view your home and, indeed, your own self.

Jan Cisek, MSc, FSSA, with over 40 years of experience, stands at the intersection of feng shui and environmental psychology, emphasizing the profound influence of semiotics – the study of signs and symbols – on our surroundings. His work particularly focuses on the impact of spatial arrangements on well-being, prosperity, and success. Jan specialises in applying feng shui principles to modern living and working environments, exploring how spatial symbolism profoundly affects our psyche.

My holistic and integral feng shui style: modern, integral, person-centred and evidence-based approach – in short, based feng shui

Quite often my potential clients ask me what kind of feng shui I do. Obviously, I’ve studied all kinds of feng shui schools, starting from classical feng shui which includes form and compass as well as other forms of feng shui including modern, intuitive, holistic and so on. I’m also a scientist, an environmental psychologist. My approach to feng shui style is very eclectic and contemporary as well as person-centred. When I work, I incorporate three feng shui schools of thought – classical feng shui, modern feng shui and virtual feng shui – plus environmental psychology. As well as drawing on his extensive experience working with top brands and corporations he also introduces elements from other fields in which he has extensive expertise: geopathic stress, electromagnetic radiation (EMR) /EMF pollution, space clearing, vastu shastra, dowsing, fractality/coherence and earth acupuncture. I have produced many innovative solutions and integral improvements in feng shui (and even in branding and logo design). I also work virtually, providing feng shui consultancy online.

Feng shui is the psychology of place

I am one of the very few feng shui consultants in the world with a Master’s degree in Environmental Psychology (from the University of Surrey) thereby combining the scientific rigour of the west to the ancient eastern art of feng shui. Most of my advice is evidence-based so you can trust and have confidence that it will work because it’s based on research. I also have an Ofqual recognised diploma in Practical Spirituality and Wellness (which is based on 3300 research papers on the benefits of spirituality). My holistic and integral approach to feng shui which works in many domains: environmental or physical, emotional, intellectual or psychological, social, cultural and virtual or spiritual.

I was a co-founder of the Feng Shui Society of Great Britain in 1993 and one of the first feng shui consultants in London, UK. At one point I was also the editor of the Feng Shui Journal for several years.

What is based feng shui?

In the urban dictionary, the term ‘based’ has several meanings. The first one that comes up in searches, is that ‘based’ means “not caring what other people think” and following a kind of positive psychology of being yourself and not letting others bring you down with their opinions. ‘Based’ can also have right-wing connotations. In the context of feng shui, ‘based’ means grounded, close to the ground, practical and firmly planted on two feet. It’s opposite of ‘pie in the sky’ bullshit. Unfortunately, in feng shui, especially in some types of feng shui thinking there is a lot of pie in the sky bullshit and I’ve been critical of this type of feng shui in my feng shui blog and generally in my teachings. And with ease of publishing on the web, there is a huge proliferation of such feng shui nonsense.

Based feng shui is a sensible, practical and evidence-based feng shui
It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to engage or participate with other schools of feng shui, classical or non-classical, their vocabulary and world-views but my feet are firmly planted in the ground. I strive to be very honest and realistic about what feng shui is, what it can do and what it can’t do. I see a lot of feng shui authors and consultants deluding themselves about what feng shui really does. I’m happy to collaborate with others who represent different views on feng shui within my broad feng shui ethics.

My thinking behind based feng shui is a radical empirical ‘basedness’ that makes possible true freedom and creativity gained from fidelity to reality and how reality can be changed. I’m very interested in new thinking and research that can explain further how feng shui works and how we can use environmental factors to enhance our wellness, personally and professionally.

Based feng shui suggests that everything begins in the middle
In my feng shui work, over the years, I’ve noticed how people are stopping themselves from achieving things or doing things or becoming who they want to become because of the way they think – in certain, limited and mechanistic ways. For example, some people think that before they can do something, they have to do XYZ. Based feng shui suggests that everything begins in the middle. You already live somewhere or have a workplace. You’re already in the middle of something, even if it is just life. The classical feng shui put it simply: you’re in the middle already – between heaven and earth and you have your human luck by simply being.

A lot of great projects, desires and wants don’t get off the ground because people think in conditional and sequential ways and actually end up doing nothing. A good example of a ‘twisted, false-problem giving feng shui’ is that one needs to do certain things according to astrological and prescriptive formula. People who follow that sort of limited and uncreative thinking – they imagine that they can only get what they want if they follow some esoteric rituals.

What you can do, or dream you can, begin it,
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it,
Only engage, and then the mind grows heated —
Begin it, and the work will be completed!
Goethe

Based feng shui is a physical affirmation
Based feng shui says you can do something now, right now to enhance your life. Even if it’s just tiding up or getting rid of clutter or cleaning the windows. Or rearranging your existing furniture. Or just writing down a list of the first steps to get you closer to manifesting your dream or goal. Based feng shui states you can use anything laying at hand, whatever is lying around in your home or workplace and spin something up, make the value of it – it’s not going to be perfect but it doesn’t matter – just start in the middle and let it grow, in all possible directions (don’t overthink it).

One of my clients didn’t have money to buy a crystal for his office window, so he hanged up a chewing gum’s silver paper to create some sparkle and anchor his new project and that worked for him and primed him to be very successful. Obviously, later he replaced it with a beautiful prismatic crystal. Unfortunately, some people still think that if they don’t do it the ‘right’ way, feng shui is not going to work. And in that way, they’re stopping themselves from achieving things, based on this destructive inertia or failure mode.

Based feng shui characteristics
The moral, ethical and critical reading of some dogmatic, managerial types of feng shui is that they imagine only one way of explaining how things work which I think is not possible or desirable. There are many types of feng shui. Horses for course. Virginia Satir observed, “There are more than 250 different ways to wash dishes, depending upon who is washing and the ingredients used.” There are many truths. There is no one truth in the universe that is expanding and growing. Based feng shui is an open-source feng shui which allows for many interpretations of environmental relationships that humans experience on a daily bases. Key characteristics of based feng shui are that allows your relationship to your home and workplace to be inclusive, non-reactive, calm, joyous, creative, person-centred, liberated and liberating as well as practical and useful without being dogmatic or too prescriptive.

Chinese compass school predictions

Predictions for your future
Classical feng shui with its astrological prediction might be seductive because it offers simple scenarios for your life. Unfortunately, life is more complex than that. According to probability theory, there are many life paths for you depending on the choices you make. It seems that nothing or almost nothing is set in stone. When it comes to designing and creating your life and your future, it’s more empowering to relay on your mind, your common sense, instinct, intuition and gut feelings as opposed to fixed mindsets or maps that may or may not be true. When you want to navigate through life, use maps that are appropriate for your life. You wouldn’t use a map of China when travelling in the UK, would you? Having said that, based feng shui accepts coexisting and equally valid patterns of life which humans all over the world have created. Based feng shui suggests understanding a particular society’s beliefs and values in the context of its own culture.

“As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know. “ Donald Rumsfeld , United States Secretary of Defense

I follow the most research in neuroscience and psychology to help me make informed decisions as opposed to decisions based on unconscious bias or superstition. By superstition, I mean culture-specific beliefs and understandings embedded in a particular time, place and context which are not necessarily universal.

The concept of “space conditioning” in “Conscious Acts of Creation” refers to the idea that a space can become imprinted with certain intentions or energies, thereby affecting outcomes within that space. Through experiments, the authors demonstrated that spaces where specific intentions were focused could retain these influences, potentially enhancing the effects of those intentions over time. This idea suggests a physical and energetic memory within spaces that aligns with the notion of creating “sacred spaces” known in various traditions, and implies that environments can be energetically conditioned for specific purposes.

“Conscious Acts of Creation: The Emergence of a New Physics” by William A. Tiller explores the profound intersection of consciousness and the physical world. This work delves into experiments showing that conscious intent, when imprinted into materials, can manifest specific outcomes even at a distance, challenging the traditional boundaries of physical science. Tiller’s research underscores a paradigm shift, suggesting that the universe operates on deeper, more interconnected levels than previously understood.

Tiller’s Intention Imprinted Electrical Device (IIED), is capable of altering physical properties such as water’s acidity, enzyme activity, and the growth rate of fruit fly larvae, purely through conscious intention. These experiments not only demonstrated the tangible influence of consciousness on material reality but also revealed the phenomenon of “space conditioning.” Laboratories where these experiments were conducted became imbued with a heightened sensitivity to intentional influences, mirroring the concept of sacred spaces in spiritual traditions. This conditioning suggests a persisting, possibly transformative, influence of consciousness on physical spaces.

Tiller’s work integrates advanced physics concepts with spirituality, proposing that human beings, enveloped in “biobodysuits,” navigate a universe far more complex and interconnected than the standard models of physics suggest. He posits that the “vacuum” of space, rather than being empty, is a plenum of energy and potential, influenced by human consciousness and intention. This perspective invites a reevaluation of the nature of reality, urging a synthesis of scientific inquiry and spiritual understanding.

The implications of Tiller’s findings extend into the realms of healing, suggesting that intentional practices can condition spaces to enhance health and well-being. This aligns with practices in alternative medicine and spiritual traditions, where the environment plays a crucial role in the healing process. Furthermore, the concept of “conditioned space” opens up new avenues for understanding how our environments can be intentionally designed to support specific outcomes, be they for healing, growth, or other purposes.

In summary, Tiller’s research in “Conscious Acts of Creation” presents a compelling argument for the inclusion of consciousness as a significant factor in the workings of the physical world. It challenges the materialistic paradigm of contemporary science and calls for an integrated approach that embraces the profound interconnectedness of mind, matter, and spirit. This work contributes to the growing body of evidence suggesting that human intention and belief can directly affect the physical world, encouraging further exploration and acceptance of these concepts within the scientific community and beyond.
